110ci stage 3 advice
« on: October 11, 2015, 08:23:22 PM »

Fall is here and I am looking to get some motor work done this winter, I am considering the 10.5:1 compression piston that comes in the stage 3 kit. It comes with the SE-259E cams also but was thinking about the SE-585 cams instead.

Anybody ever do these kits? looks like a big difference in HP and Torque.

What do you guys think?

At 10.5 you'd be able to effectively use a Wood 888, as a suggestion.

a set of ported heads and a tman 625/590 will get you in the high 120's for power and torque and it'll make the bike a lot more fun to ride.  dsv

The 259e is a good cam in this combination. Add a little more compression and mild headwork and it will roll mid 120s square.
Too much compression for the se585

When you say add a little more compression, are you referring to the 10.5:1 pistons or are you saying get some head work done also with the 259e cams?

What type of headwork?

Cam depends on your riding style.   This 259e cam comes in late around 3200 and most of us ride at 2400-3200 and even with a compression boost if its the Streetglide that weighs 800 plus pounds and you want/need to get that moving.    I would want the 24d or one of its clones to be used and set to 10.5/10.6 to one and get much more bang for your buck.

Would a bike with these cams be reliable?

'Had the SE StageIII Kit in the '09, I preferred the 259s moving the curve to the "right" (instead of the all "left" of the 255s) the 259s seemed to come on around 2,750 and pull well into the 5,500 range. I was satisfied with the power 107/119... If you have a Dealer that will stand behind this SE Kit then it's a good way to go.

The SE Pistons in the Kit required a good bit of honing (w/ torque plates) to get a proper fit (supposed to be drop in, the pistons in the SE Kit I got must have been out of spec??)

That was a few years back, now I'd look real hard (especially if you don't have a Dealer that will stand behind the SE StageIII Kit) at one of the 113 kits (cylinders properly bored to good pistons)by some of the Indys, GMR seems to have the 113s dialed in...

I'm a big fan of the T-Man 625s, they come on earlier and stay later than the 259s...

Don't forget the lifters, and crank runout...

Save your money and keep the bike stock. Or buy a crotch rocket if you want a bike that will do 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds.  ;D

I have the stage 3 in my limited. 102 hp at rear wheel. Cam pulls strong from about 2600. Over 30k on this combo but it can be prone to detonation.  The timing had to be retarded 2 degrees and fuel set on the rich side.

Thanks a lot for the info FLAheatwave, I am still pondering this and I have 2 good dealers that deal with this. I will be talking to some techs on the issue and will most likely get it done in December when they have their off season specials, again thanks for the advice it is a big help.

Nah, Crotch rockets are ugly, but appreciate the well mannered advice DH

When you say add a little more compression, are you referring to the 10.5:1 pistons or are you saying get some head work done also with the 259e cams?

What type of headwork?

2.10 intake- stock exhaust.....mild porting   310 cfm @ .600  1.78 port opening

with a 259E/SE10.5-1 pistons should make 122 square

same headwork with a cam I did that is similar to a 259 with a 1.5 degree earlier close and .018 more lift made 126/129

Not an expensive combo......there are other pistons options than the SE/mahle anymore....id rather have diamonds than the SE
