Compensator nut
« on: January 22, 2007, 06:25:10 PM »

My 03 SERK with 15k started making a loud clunking noise from the primary a couple of days ago. Sounded real nasty and was audible at idle as well as when ridden. 103 engine making a noise like that, I dropped it off at Bartels Harley in Marina del Rey, CA right away. The service writer listened to it for a couple of seconds and diagnosed it as a problemwith the compensator nut. They fixed it right away. Seemed like no big deal, just that the Harley warranty would not cover it. They said it's more of an adjustment than a real repair. Is that true? [smiley=confused5.gif]
Does this need to be done every 15k and has that happened to anyone else?

A loose comp nut has been a problem for several of us here. If the bike is under warranty then it should have been covered!
Adjustment my a$$ >:(

I knew it! It should have been covered under warranty. They sold me the 7 year unlimited  miles warranty when I bought the bike brand new. Harley Davidson warranty administered by Western General. I have almost 4 years left. So why would they not submit it as a claim?

I'd call the Service Mgr up and discuss it with him.  If you don't get any satisfaction from him, I'd call Harley or the Warranty Company.

Firehog-

As the others have stated, the compensator nut coming loose is not a wear/adjustable item like the primary chain tension.  It is a known problem that on some years they come loose and their is a service technical bulletin on the new tightening procedure.

It happened on my 03 RK.  The bike was covered under the extended warranty, but they would not pay to have it tightened, per the new HD guidelines at the time.  They said it was maintenance issue.  I asked the dealer if any where in any of Harley, service manuels, does it call for checking the compensator nut.

Guess what the answer was.  NO.

The extended warranty would not pay. I was told that I could argue with them, but I valued my time more.  They charged me $30.

Good reason not to buy an extended warranty, I guess.  I like I told a guy once who was trying to sell me an extended warranty,  If I have to buy the warranty to feel good about my purchase, I guess I did not need his product.

They fixed my 04 SEEG after I mentioned the noise all under warranty.

I had the same problem with my '04 RK Classic.  I thought it was a rod knocking it was so loud. Finally, it was diagnosed as the compensator which as many have said here is a well known recurring problem.  In my case the nut had backed off and stripped.  The repair was covered under warranty and should always be covered as a warranty item.

I don't know why the dealers would say otherwise.  They are compensated by the MoCo for warranty repairs so it's no skin off their nose if it's a warranty issue.

Big B ...  lol

from my experience ( Comp Nut came loose and broke friggin everything.... )
basic warranty covered everything...
except FedEx for parts and some of the fluids...  and a rental car for a week
extended warranty would have paid for that

TSB has been out for  a long time...  unfortunatley i didnt know about til my bike exploded...
but..its all good now....

There are two different experiences being described here.  Some failures under warranty that were covered.  Some past warranty that, one would think, should have been covered under purchased extended warranties but which were not.

Johnny, you got off cheap! Instead of them charging me $30 like your Harley dealer did, I had to pay $140 for the same repair/ adjustment.

I believe that this came up before, and there was a service bullatin. sp

Mine came loose before any damage was done. not covered.

Harley's stand is that a loose comp nut is service related item. If the nut comes loose and damage is done then all is covered under warranty.
