2016 CVO RGU Review
« on: October 16, 2015, 05:15:03 PM »

Within days of picking up my new ride, I put on the customary 1,000 mile break in ride over the weekend to get it in for service the following week. As soon as the service was done at a cost of $450 (ouch!!!), I took off from Chicago for a 3,500 mile jaunt through Taos NM, Durango CO, Silverton CO, Ouray CO, Aspen, CO and Golden CO before returning home. It now has 5,000 miles on it after having the bike no more than 3 weeks. I drove through rain, sleet, and in some cases heat through the mountains of NM & CO. There were a few days where the morning temperature was a tick above 40 degree Fahrenheit. But with appropriate textile apparel, I was toasty warm and comfortable for the duration of the trip.

There were times when I was accelerating at speeds of up to 90 and 100 mph in short bursts. At other times, I was cruising comfortably at 80 mph for extended periods. The amazing thing was that the bike was buttery smooth at any speed. I recall the days of having a 2001 Fat Boy where the vibration from the V-Twin at anything over 65 mph was utterly uncomfortable to the point of rattling my fillings loose. This thing does not vibrate. It is softer and smoother then the BMW R1200RT at higher speeds. The faster you go, the smoother the ride. It was utterly amazing.

Another road worthy advancement is the 31.9 lean angle. With the bike fully loaded with a passenger plus travel pack, I was able to take deep curves with steep angles and take it with aplomb. It was rather amazing. Although it doesn't have the same lean angle capability of BMW R1200RT, it was darn close. I was thoroughly impressed and thrilled with its road hugging manners. The balance and ease with which a 1,000 pound plus bike can take aggressive banking curves was rather marvelous.

The combination of seating position, handle bars, and ergonomics were perfectly balanced for all day riding in the lap of luxury. The heated seats were nice and comfy and I did not experience any ass pain from riding 8 hours and in some cases 10 hours a day. It is definitely a highway chomping luxury cruiser capable of eating up large chunks of asphalt with ease. The 6 gallon tank was good for approximately 200 miles depending on how aggressive and fast your riding. Cruising at 80 mph on the interstate, it would take me about 2 to 2.5 hours between runs for refueling.

The only downside is the limited capability of the HD GPS. They should have stuck with Garmin. It does not provide count down notification and street name of the next turn like Garmin. Very frustrating as it would tell you to take the next exit in a half mile and there are three or more exits in that half mile. Very confusing. Also the cell phone hooked up to the UBS plug was confusing. I could not dial out and when a call came in I could not figure out how to answer the incoming call. Sirius works okay with the occasional lost signal. CB worked fine with no know issues.

Another brilliant component are the airflow floorboards. This is the shiznick. I don't recall feeling one single tingle coming through the floorboards. My foot felt like it was floating on clouds. These have got to be the most comfortable floorboards I've ever experienced on any motorcycle bar none. It was truly amazing. The heated grips worked well and it nearly roasted my hand at level 3 setting. Most times I had it at level 2 or less when it was cold outside. It's easy to grab a nice hand full of throttle with those 1.25 inch grips.

By the end of the trip, the bike was coated top to bottom with dust, dirt, bugs, and road grime upon completing the trip. Now it’s time to strip it apart top to bottom and give it a good wax job.

Sounds like it was a good trip. I would have used the Bluetooth feature to connect with the phone.
It works flawlessly and usb hooked to an iPod or flash drive.

I agree with King Glide.  The blue tooth for the phone works great.  I use my USB plug for an SD card with a USB adapter for almost 3,000 songs on MP3, which also works great (in fact, it works better than my 2011's iPod in the saddlebag!).
I agree with you about the GPS.  The one that came with the 2011 RGU was awesome by comparison.  Obviously the Rushmore crew rushed the GPS design thru and didn't bother to listen to us at the same time about it.  Typical Harley.  Nice because it's integrated, but not necessarily better by a long shot.
Otherwise, you spoke for all of us with new RGU's, be they 16's or 15's.  They do handle superbly for an almost 1,000 pound motorcycle, and twisties or straightaways, country roads or interstates, they are a joy to drive.
Glad you're happy!

I agree with most all your review.  Garmin is better.  However once you play with all the nav setting it will give you distance to turn in the display, and count it down.  It will usually display the street name if you have it set to do that.

Phone when blue toothed works great for calls.  I plug my iPhone in for music, but calling is bluetooth.

I have done back to back 700 plus mile days on my 15.  I also did a 6880 mile trip in 14 days on it.  At one year old I had just a tick over 27,000 miles on it.

thank you for sharing. I'm following all of the SERU 2015 and 2016 threads. I may dive in with a purchase at some point but trying to hold off and wishing on a 120 motor. Right now, no need for me to switch up as I love my 2009 SERG with Chopped tourpack - Silver. Still get many many looks and she rides pretty good after my mods.
Enjoy the ride.

Agree with the review in almost all regards. The GPS sucks compared to Garmin, so it's been relegated almost to an emergency role on my bike as it's just not friendly to use. My USB port is has a USB 8gb thumb drive filled with music and it works great. Phone is bluetooth as others have said. The bike needed exhaust and a tune, it's capable without it... but you can tell you are leaving something on the table. To put it in real life terms, stock I was barely able to outpace my buddy's 2001 SG with a nicely built 96. After the exhaust and dyno tune he cannot touch me.

We were running through 90+ mph big sweeping turns, the bike is nothing short of a miracle in that situation.

Any before and after numbers? I only have Reinhart slip on exhaust for now as I've been told that any mods to intake and header might affect the warrenty. Definitely plan on a dyno tune once warrenty is up. What type of dyno tune did you get?

ACFixer did slightly better than me with his setup.  I have V&H Power Pro Headers and Monster Rounds with a SE-PST and got almost 108 tq with mid 90's hp at low 3000s rpm.

I one just like it, added the chopped tour pack also and lower for winter months.  Traded it with 44K miles on it for the 12 SERG Skunk, which with 45K on it traded for this 15.

I have Fullsac head pipe, and his 2.25 inch power cores, and the TTS master Tuner.  Had it Dyno tuned by Doc.  95~96 HP and 115 torque SAE.

Dude,

For the first four paragraphs, I thought I was reading the HD marketing materials!    :huepfenlol2:   The fifth paragraph compels me to offer a suggestion which helped me, however.  Firstly, make sure your software is version 1.19.1.  If needed,  there are directions on how to upgrade in the owners' section of the HD website.  Next, plug the bike into your battery tender, grab your Infotainment manual and go through it while sitting on the bike with a headset on.  I think you'll be pleased with what you learn even though you're an experienced Rider and Garmen user.  The system does more than folks seem to realize.  There are at least a couple dozen voice command options.  While using Nav, the system, it does show the current street and next turn.    Using the touch screen, you can choose numerous setting for the right, left and lower fields, including the count down etc.

The blue tooth / phone interface works flawlessly for me.  Callers think I'm in the office while listening to me.   ::)    Hope it all works out for you.

Holy Bat mobile. 27,000 in one year is amazing. I have to work. Not sure I could keep up with you even if I had the time. Enjoy.

Is that at the crank or wheel?

Actually more miles than that, thats just on my 15 SERGU.  I have put just over 3500 miles on My SERK and about 1000 on my fatboy.

I have to work too.  Lucky with my job, I work 21 days off shore than get 21 days off, 2 are lost for travel but its still a lot of time off.

Glad you could get some of the nav setting you wanted.

Is that at the crank or wheel?

The wheel.  Dyno tuner I use is one of the best with the TTS.  I use Doc in FL, so its about a 650 mile ride one way for him to tune for me.  I'm  repeat customer as are a few of my friends.

He tuned my built CVO King, which is 124.69 torque and 123.76 hp.  It runs smother and gets much better fuel economy than my other CVO Road glides have.
