El Nino 2015/2016
« on: October 16, 2015, 11:07:23 PM »

Mudslides closed I-5 and buried cars and trucks....  http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-rain-mudslides-los-angeles-20151015-story.html

It sounds like El Nino is going to come to fruitation and from what the experts say......one of the strongest in fifty years.   Apparently California and the east are going to be hit the hardest.  Looks like it already started north of Los Angeles the past few days.

The east is supposed to be hit with an early cold spell this coming week.  Dig out the Gerbing heated gear.

Yeah, we are breaking out the heated gear along with the life jackets. You on the west coast better carry a shovel and foul weather gear. Good luck out there and be careful. At least the water is going down and we are somewhat drying out.

In Ohio, the weather "experts" are saying a warmer winter with less snow than normal. Figures, I just bought a quad with a plow on it last month.......

After looking at some of the pictures of cars buried to the roof in mud, I sure hope no motorcycle riders were on that stretch of highway.

Jerry on the local news they showed several tractor trailers with mud up to their windows.....showed another rig where the driver climbed up on top of the cab cuz he thought the mud was going to come inside.  So it could be possible that there could have been a motorcycle or two caught in there.

However, they've been working around the clock with bucket loaders and front loaders, clearing that mess and nothing reported about a bike.  Kind of amazing.....it's about 100 miles north of here and we didn't get any rain that day/night.  But much of California will have those same kind of results due to all the forest fires this year, once El Nino hits those areas.  :nervous:

I was very surprised that all that mud, rock, even boulders was fluid enough to flow like that, fill in around various vehicles, etc. and yet the next day it was dry enough to walk on and not sink down in.  I think that just goes to show just how dry it is out here......    http://a.scpr.org/i/1a1ca20ff984ab7c48fb63cc3038cb39/113108-full.jpg

Same forecast for Northern IL...  Warmer and less snow for the winter.  Which is fine by me!

I really feel for you all out on the west coast.  Drought for so long and now this in your forecast.  One extreme to the other.
The middle of the country had their El Niño this year.  On average, we had about 2" of rain per week dumped on us from March thru June, and it ruined our spring riding.  July was bad with unpredictable weather, then next to nothing but crazy heat in August.  September and October have made up for it with wonderful days for riding, and I've put 3k on the bike in short fashion.  But they (the experts) have said this El Niño was likely to last thru this coming winter, which is unusual to say the least.

It was all around us, but we are safe and dry. I was outside working in the yard, listening to the constant roll of thunder when I looked up and saw cloud formations I have never seen (see attached picture). The storm was west of us and coming our way, most of the bad mudslides were just west of us, 2 to 30 miles depending on what you saw on the news. About 45 minutes after the pictures is when it hit us with very heavy rains, lightning, and thunder.
