Fault Codes Help Please
« on: October 18, 2015, 12:00:38 PM »

Hello

Help please.
2011 CVO ULTRA ROADGLIDE.

Engine management light comes on after been riding a few miles.

Followed grc's (Terry's) means of entry into the "Stored diagnostics Trouble Codes", he posted this some time ago (I have tried to copy and attach to this post what grc posted elsewhere), via the odometer button. The screen I refer to is the odometer screen. The button is the odometer button.

Here's what I get:

1) Hold button in at same time turn on ignition, this appears:  diAG
2) Press the button this appears:  PSSPtb
3) P flashes, hold button in, this appears: no rSP
4) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
5) single click gets S flashing, hold the button in, this appears: nonE
6) Another single click, this scrolls across the screen: Pn 68924-07
7) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
8) single click gets SP flashing, hold the button in, this appears: nonE
9) another single click this scrolls across the screen: Pn 70733-10
10) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
11) single click gets t flashing, hold the button in, this appears: nonE
12)another single click this scrolls across the screen: Pn 74740-10
13) single click on the button: back to PSSPtb
14) single click gets b flashing, hold the button in, this appears: C1095
15) single click this comes up on the screen: C1216
16) single click this comes up on the screen:  End

Could someone help by deciphering the above please. Does the above actually identify a fault, if so what is the remedy.

Thanks

John,  I'm on the way out so don't have time to look up the codes.  If you have access to an Android device, phone or pad, you can download an app called V twin Reference.  The app will give you the proper procedures and a listing and explanation of all of the diagnostic codes.

John,
See what little I know in red text above.  Sorry I can't be of more help, but someone will weigh in that will know more than I do.

Thank's everybody for very quick response.

Thanks fired00d , I followed your lead to grc's list of code descriptions. The C1095 and C1216 codes are front and rear brake switch open. Can anyone confirm that is fault. I have actually been experiencing cruise control fault recently, is this a symptom of that? Would this be the reason I am getting the engine management light on?

To get ECM Codes you need to have ECM powered. Ignition switch on if not ECM is not powered. That is why you are getting No RSP.

Very possible the your rear brake light switch is defective, it happened to me on my '10. Infects the cruise control, will have a code in memory. Probably start with the brake switches (both).
Any work done to the handle bars/controls recently?
Hope you fine the issue.

Hello Hogmike

What I have had recently with cruise control is:

Two months ago, when using cruise control, it stopped working. Engine management light came on, but if I switched cruise control off the engine management light stayed on until I switched of the ignition. Then, as long as I did not switch on the cruise control switch, whenever I switched on the ignition and used the bike I did not get the engine management light on.

About four weeks ago I took the bike for it's annual roadworthy test (MOT in UK). The tech who tested it found the rear brake light switch did not work, someone on this forum said that this was probably why the cruise control did not work. Sure enough when I got the bike back, after having a new switch fitted, the cruise control worked for a few miles but then stopped working. This was even though the rear brake light switch still worked, both rear and front brake light switches still work fine.

Since then I have done a few hundred miles with the cruise control switched off (I do not use it much, only on the motorway, if conditions are favourable). During this time the engine management never came on. The engine management light came on today for no apparent reason, even though the cruise control was switched off and every thing was working ok and carried on to do so even though the engine management light was on.

So, I decided to check out if any faults were being thrown up as per GRC's post to another person, hence this thread.

The ignition is switched on when I carry out the diagnostic check, I still get the No Resp code.

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

I think first I would go to the tech/dealer who did your switch replacement and inform them that the issue is still there.
If you get no help there I would check all connections (front and rear switches and connections)
Just a guess, but you MAY have a loose connection somewhere since these areas have been worked on before.
Also, look for a loose/bad ground wire under the fairing (I think there is a black ground on the left side?) Not familiar with the RG but the batwing has a ground there. This MAY explain phantom electrical issues like you describe.

Has there been ANY work done on the bike that would include these circuits?
Electrical issues are always hard to track down.
Good luck.

This smells like a ground isn't good in the front part of the harness.     Not a fun one to troubleshoot.

Thanks' everyone.

It will soon be laid up for the salt season. Then I tackle the 1 litre of oil per 700 miles issue. I shall also now try to locate all common earth's and remake them. (I assume this should not be to difficult if they are a dedicated earth and not relying on making earth connection through equipment). Probably sounds a bit primitive to electrickery people but I am mechanical type of man so apologies for the abuse of the terminology.

It's an odd fault really, I can set of from an ignition off, then start up and ride away. the engine management light will stay off for one to two miles then come on and stay on until ignition off. At first  I thought maybe if I leave the rear brake alone to see if using that bought it on and similarly the front brake but, no that makes no difference, it still appears after the distance above.
