I thought I'd share some photos I took yesterday evening of the Bull Shoals Lake area, where I've been living now for a couple of years. It was a beautiful evening, and as all you photographers know, the magic hour of evening can be the best time for photography. The fall colors haven't peaked yet, but there's a lot of color out none the less.
Bull Shoals Lake at normal pool has roughly 730 miles of shoreline and can have as much as 25+ foot visibility (clarity) in late summer. At flood pool, the lake has over 1,100 miles of shoreline and is 80+ river miles long (White River), all contributing to making it the 23rd largest lake in the US.
The dam at the lake was the 5th largest in the world when it was completed in 1952, at 256' high and 2,256' in length. You can drive over it and the view down into the White River valley from the dam is pretty awesome. We set up lawn chairs right on the dam walkway last July 4th and were within 1/4 mile of where the fireworks were being shot off from a hill overlooking the lake.
It is always quiet and peaceful up here, and the weather is usually mild, typically with light winters. We have deer and turkey in the yard most days (see photo 8949), and the view stretches out over 2 miles to the south of our house to the cliffs in the left-center of that photo.
For your information, the shot numbered 8982 was taken on land that is for sale, but I don't know what they're asking for it. The shots numbered 8957, 8964, and 8965 were all taken from the same 3 acre plot that is also for sale and I believe the last time I checked they wanted $150,000 for it, which is very steep for up here. But it's ready to build on and has some of the best views in this area, plus it is 190' above the water, with steep cliffs down below and water that goes down another 200' deep right below the property. And it's relatively private, as are most places up here.
Our house is almost exactly 1/4 mile off a county road on a private drive shared by 2 other homes, neither of which I can see for the forests between us.
We are just over an hours drive to Branson, and just under 2 hours to Eureka Springs. The roads up here are pretty awesome and as you can see from the photos, they offer amazing long-range views of the surrounding area. I can even see Missouri from some of them. The closest cities of any consequence are Harrison and Mountain Home, but we prefer the latter. The people are friendly here, and many are retirees or veterans, which means I fit right in!
I hope you enjoy this look at a little of what this part of the country has to offer.
