Best intake for performance
« on: November 11, 2015, 11:03:54 PM »

I'm curious if anyone has tested the different air intake systems to see what flows the most air with the least amount of resistance. I currently have the ventilator that came on my CVO with the K&N element. I'm curious if the twin tuned induction from S&S performs as well as the heavy breather, or the other new ones with the element on top and sides.

I  did some back to back testing on my own 209 SG 107 that made 123/121.. I tested the S&S dual unit, Doherty billet, SE heavy breather, and SE high flow, and Whimmer better sucker and CVO oval air cleaner. Kury street sleeper,

Out of those on my own bike looking at not only peak power but also KPA readings The only two that had roll back on KPA where the SE std high flow unit ( cotton with blue rubber) and the CVO unit. The CVO unit with the thicker K&N replacement filter solved that issue.  Since that test we have run some others but nothing has really created issues other that the stock CVO unit and Stage 1 SE unit for bigger builds.. A stock CVO 110 + bolt in cam with the stock filter will not run 100KPA . I just got done tuning one. It would hit 100 KPA until aprox 3500 and the roll back to 95 KPA and by 6000 was at 92 KPA.

Simple fix really buy the K&N and go.

I was curious because a tuner told me that removing the air filter is worth 4-7 HP and TQ on the Dyno and was curious if that was true. If  changing air intake on a 110 with cams or bigger build you could eliminate that drop. We spend a lot of money and don't want to leave it on the table if one is better than the other. Thanks for your input.

I had my motor built last winter and it was tuned with a stock cvo filter. Would it be of any benefit to switch to the K&N even though it was tuned with the stock filter?

If a air cleaner set up is restrictive for that build then yes it can cause a slight reduction in power. How much well that depends on the build and the filter in use. If I put a stock filter on my 124 can I say that an AC is worth 20 hp??

For the basic build the stage I style filters will net you 98 %  CVO oval filter use the +1 K&N unit they will get you there . Have run those on the 113 kits and they are not rolling back on KPA.  A filter that flows through both the sides and ends works very well . even with the stock ham can cover. I am sure its blocking some the flow but it works better than the stock SE unit. ( does not apply to the oval units)

Yeah, I put an order in today..... I am third in line and they are running behind making the standoffs so it will be 2-3 weeks on delivery.

For those interested, the stock CVO "Ventilator" AC robs 2-3 HP and a few points of TQ on Stage I builds that are in the hi 90 HP range. I pull them off in between pulls on the dyno while the bike is still running to show the Guys that are interested. The SE Heavy Breather robs zero HP and actually bumps the TQ a couple of points. Intake noise does increase with the Heavy Breather.

Using the SE Ventilator, does replacing the stock 29670-09 black paper element with the SE 29400022A red High-Flo K&N element remove the restriction?

Or is the Tilley +1” K&N filter the only solution if you want to stay with the Ventilator?
