Whatever happened to Boom Stage II upgrade?
« on: November 17, 2015, 10:33:45 PM »

Last spring I got caught up in the excitement of Boom Stage II upgrades, played with system at dealer display and was amazed! Then I heard about amps blowing, speakers blowing and many software problems (some written on this sight). Local dealer says glitches are resolved, none the less I would rather get my feedback from this sight. For those well meaning members that recommend aftermarket please know that's not for me. If bugs have been worked out "field testing" (done by paying customers), I may go for it.

Hey Motor1 .........apparently no responses on this forum ......did you ever get an answer anywhere? Has the BOOM! Stage II audio system had the bugs worked out yet?? I'm thinking about upgrading my front speakers to the bi-amped BOOM! Stage II and leaving the rear tour-pak speakers disconnected. My dealer advises this is possible with the dealer reflash.

No reply, not even a PM.  (The silence was deafening!)
I went ahead and purchased the Boom II upgrade (fairing and tourpak only).
I have not installed it yet, (two kids in club soccer takes away ALL of my free time).

X2. Why add to a system that is mediocre at best? I'm keeping head unit and replacing everything else.

So I know there are many members who are anti-Harley audio. I like factory components so that I am not cutting wires and splicing etc. I know there are people Who can do a great job installing aftermarket but once a harness is cut it's cut.
So after months of delays (my crazy schedule) I finally installed Boom II, four speaker locations like stock, and had dealer reflash it. All I can say is I am very pleased; you can feel the bass and I can hear it on the highway with ear plugs in at half volume.
It's only been one day but I'm very happy.  Hoping this system stands the test of time. If I am wrong and I have problems I will share them with this site.

Hiya Motor1:

I'm not an expert, but if memory serves me, there was an issue with certain dates of manufacture on the speakers that could be addressed through the HD Digital Tech or whaterver they call it.  Also, from what I recall it is essential that the head unit /  amp be programmed before turning things on.

It sounds like you are planning to do a self-install.  I would re-think that as you risk frying your new components.  That is if I didn't mis-understand you intentions.

Kind Regards,

Mark

isn't that exactly what you're doing by keeping the stock head unit?

Maybe so. I know the factory head unit has its limits but it serves me fine. Besides name a better head unit option for a Rushmore.

Motor1 .......I have the same bike and agree with you completely. The BOOM! Stage I which came with the bike is OK ......but not effective at cruising speeds. Just ordered a complete BOOM! Stage II upgrade and will have my dealer flash my radio before I do the installation. To be certain my dealer flashes the radio correctly, would you advise the ID of the flash file which was loaded by your dealer? Thanks in advance.

I will check which version was loaded and let you know. Keep in mind I thought the same thing that you did, that you have to flash first, I was wrong. I showed up at the dealer with the amps and harnes installed and was advised the system cannot be re-flashed if the speakers are not installed. Luckily I had the speakers in my tour pack promptly installed them and they did the flash.
Last point  be sure to do the latest radio update from Harley, it prevents your radio from turning itself on. Before you start taking everything apart and pulling the main fuse do the update and then be sure the radio was turned off. Also the instructions suck big time PM me when you're doing the install and I will clarify some things that took me hours to figure out.

I will check which version was loaded and let you know. Thanks Motor1 .......as it worked for your bike it should work for mine as well :2vrolijk_21: Keep in mind I thought the same thing that you did, that you have to flash first, I was wrong. I showed up at the dealer with the amps and harnes installed and was advised the system cannot be re-flashed if the speakers are not installed. Luckily I had the speakers in my tour pack promptly installed them and they did the flash. WOW! In retrospect, presumably that makes sense. But the lack of any explanations of how this all works is the reason there's some confusing advice on these forums.
Last point  be sure to do the latest radio update from Harley, it prevents your radio from turning itself on. Aaah ......didn't know that. Was wondering if I needed to pull the radio fuse to keep the radio from coming on automatically at bike startup .....THANKS :) Before you start taking everything apart and pulling the main fuse do the update V1.20.1? and then be sure the radio was turned off. Also the instructions suck big time PM me when you're doing the install and I will clarify some things that took me hours to figure out. Will do Motor1
Greatly appreciate your taking the time to supply this terrific information which should save some of us a great deal of grief!!

Here's what I ordered for the upgrade on my 2015 FLTRUSE:
  • Boom! Audio Amplifier-76000277A (installs under the Tourpak - powers rear speakers)
Boom! Audio Stage II 6.5” Road Glide Fairing Speakers-76000594A
Boom! Audio Stage II 6.5” Tour-Pak & Trike Body Speakers-76000526A
Boom! Audio Stage II Tour-Pak Speaker Installation Kit-76000585
    WIRE HARNESS,RR SPEAKER INTERCONNECT   69200714
    WIRE HARNESS,RR SPEAKER JUMPER   69200489

Is this the same list you ordered?

Just to cap off this thread which appears to have been "continued" in the more recent Re: Upgrade 2016 CVO RGU to Boom! Stage II Audio  thread:
https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=110035.msg1418427#msg1418427

SUCCESS !! The BOOM! Audio Stage II is correctly installed in my 2015 FLTRUSE and sounds quite impressive .....at least around town (no high speed runs yet). The two challenges for me were:
  • knowing what to do with the (undocumented) rear amplifier harness connector #10 aka [297A] and;
  • learning de-pinning and re-pinning the Digital Tech connector [91A] correctly
If I had to do it over again, I'd skip the 69200489 harness and create the 313 connection up front just as motor1 did.

There was a post last week on this very same topic. Trigger man stated he tore down his '08 dresser to have it painted and this install was tougher. My dealer quoted me $1900 for parts, labor and flash, parts are reported at $1200 to $1300, so to me $600 or $700 is a deal rather than screwing up myself.
