What milage are people seeing from stock tire, the new "D407T" Tire Size 180/65B16?

From Dunlop site "Dunlop is proud to introduce a new “T” version of the Dunlop D407™ rear touring tire, which will be original equipment on all 2014 Touring models featuring black sidewall tires. The Dunlop D407T™ introduces Dunlop’s second generation touring technology into the Harley-Davidson original equipment tire line-up."

I got 10,500 on mine. Front is way good, rear half worn and slight cup, but I did 7k on highway with it.

We had Dunlop rep give a talk at hog meeting. Tires were improved again last year, the "T" added. American Elite has been out in correct size over three years. As for difference in stock tire and American elite.
 AE has 1/16th more tread.
Compound is same and improved last year.
Harley patented the tread design on stock tire with research help from Dunlop. So they own the tire pretty much.
Dunlop made AE to be close but handle wet "slightly better" and
Dunlop will not sell HD tire to anyone but HD.

So they added a 1/16 to AE, maybe get some sales from people that look into the tires ,over the guy who strictly takes it to dealer.

Specs are the same as far as for our bikes....they just cant see HD branded tires as part of deal...

So whats you miles and how they look?

Only some sizes have been out for three years.  The rear tire for the guys with the 18" rims just became available in the American Elite series last month.

Too bad you didn't ask that Dunlop rep why they haven't done anything about the cupping issues.  From what I've been reading over the past several years, most folks have to replace the rears due to cupping long before the actual tread wear would dictate it's time to replace.  I wonder if that's just the H-D patented tread design, or more likely the basic Multi-Tread dual compound design from Dunlop.  I find it strange that they sell a much more expensive tire with the promise of improved tire life over older designs, and yet most people are changing them out just as often as they did on the old Touring model tires due to the cupping issue.

I bought a set of American Elete tires, I have about 7k miles and I will be lucky to get another 3k miles from the rear tire. I don't do burn outs, wheelies just normal semi aggressive riding. No beter than the Comander 2 tires.

Lots of factors to consider in how many miles your tires last:

Load carried (mostly solo riding or two up, heavy rider/passenger)
Road composition where you ride: rough/smooth
Tire pressure (checked frequently?)
Aggressive riding and braking

My tires were replaced at 17k due to cupping, but probably had 5k remaining.

I don't understand how anyone get that kind of mileage out of this Dunlop. I run a 180 55 18 and never get more than 7,000 miles. I thought maybe it was the bike. But its not. Maybe it the year (09 SERG) Don't ride that hard, or on terrible roads. Do ride some twisties and about 1/3 is 2 up. Every time I buy a new it upsets me. Going to try the new AE Dunlop this time. Hope its better.

i have been getting 10k +or- out of mine on the rear, fronts 15 to 18k. hoping for better things with the new AE. 4 rear tires and 3 fronts so far, and 42k on the bike. at least the better pricing of the new AE will ease the pain

You got that many miles without cupping? If so, why switch? That's unheard of.

I can't get more than a few thousand without cupping starting. Air pressure, riding style, etc, doesn't seem to prevent this.

Looking forward to trying the new AE rear 18" next year.

Maybe I am just blessed but I have no trouble with cupping, got 17K on the 09 SERG original tire and replaced it prior to it being worn out, I just wanted a new set of tires and they were on sale.

I haven't had any cupping issues. I have seen other bikes that highway tour wear tires square. Makes the outer edge look choppy

I believe that's also being called cupping. Run your hand on it and it will feel like the tread is poking up or cupping up. Looks like a saw blade at times. But I haven't seen it on the new tread

My 09 SERG had the 180/55-18 and I got 20K out of the first rear, 19K out of the second, and traded it before the 3rd needed replacement.

My 12 SERG had the 180/55-18 and I got 17K out of the first and 18K out of the second, traded it before the 3rd need replacement.

My 13 SERK has the 180/55-18 and I had to replace the first one at 14K, I'm sure its due to the built motor and I ride it harder.

My 15 SERGU I believe has the 180/65B16 I had to replace the first one right at 14K.  I think think it either got low, or was a bad tire.  Im on the second tire and I have 16K on it and it still looks good.  I will get at least 18K out of it maybe more.

on my 2014 serk I get about 18000 out of the rear and change the front at the same time  even thou I could get 5000 more out of the front, I just feel safer with a new front.   The first set did cup at 8000 but HD replaced for free. The second set did not cup till about 16000. I put AE on my wife's Road king She had 18.000 on with no cupping.       I just wonder if the lower profile tires have more of a tendency to cup.   Billy

I got 20k on the original without any cupping. 18k on second one noticed cupping on that one and I have 8k on this one no issues, and I'm getting 2 rears to one front. Best tire I have used yet. I will try the Dunlop AE next just because of the price difference. Performance wise I can't complain.
