Is there a MOD to allow removal of the lowers on 2016 SESG?
« on: December 10, 2015, 08:46:05 AM »

I am trading my 2014 CVO Limited for 2016 SESG. I have never liked the lowers, especially in the summer time. I have asked my dealer if there is a modification that can be done like new heads. The dealer said "not that he knows of". Has anyone tried this yet? I am planning on performance upgrades; maybe even a 113 kit, but IMO the lowers shouldn't be there.

I was told by dealership mechanic that I trust that it will not hurt a thing to take them off. Won't hurt motor and water pump has a switch that won't let it run without water. However I would do more research before removing lowers.

I almost didn't get the 15 CVO, beause i never liked lowers.  However, having ridden in the summer, which i don't like ridding  any bike when it is above 85 degrees anyway, and in the winter, down to 37 degrees, i see no reason to even think about removing the lowers.  And i am not sold on the fact that you couldn't cause an issue by removing them.

I've actually come to like the look and my ETIMS has never engaged, but the fans have, so i wouldn't remove them.

Ride with them, there is a vent to allow air in the summer to come thru and you can close it for winter.

Flash,
If you take off the lowers, where do you put the radiators, fans, and hoses?  And if you remove all of that, where do you put on an oil cooler?  These 110 engines run hot and need cooling.  Are you going to remove the water pump and associated equipment, then add an oil cooler adapter to the oil filter assembly?

Even if you do all that, you'll need to re-program (if possible; maybe even replace) the ECM to change from water/oil cooling to air/oil cooling, and the stock ECM expects to receive inputs from the water-cooling sensors.

I would be very careful about doing something like this to a brand-new bike; it will void the warranty, cost a lot of money, might never run correctly, and you might have trouble selling it with those mods.  Might be better to buy a pre-water cooled SESG than to try this.

IMHO it would be a very bad idea to try to turn a Twin Cooled bike into an Air Cooled bike, but if one has lots of money and doesn't care about things like warranty then I've got no doubt it can be done.  But it's a lot more complicated than just removing the lowers and radiators.  Go back and read Para Bellum's post again, he gave you the straight scoop.

I know I can't just take the lowers off due to the reasons mentioned. That is why I was asking if anyone knew of anyone doing this. I can't be the only person that hates the lowers. I assumed that there would be some head work, oil cooler relocation and reprogramming the ECM. Anyway, thanks for everyone's reply.

Put an Air-cooled 120ci in it and remove the lowers along the way :)

At a minimum, I would not trust that mechanic.  If I don't trust a wrench, I don't use 'em at all.

I would suggest that if you don't like the lowers, then this is not the bike for you.   what you are asking is a bit more than just a small 'cosmetic' change, I would keep looking.

I swore someone on this board moved the coolant tanks in the bags or under the side covers because he wanted speakers in the lowers....

Yes someone did relocate the coolant resivor, that did not remove his lowers nor relocate all the other components in the lowers such as both radiators.
I think your asking for trouble to remove. As stated if you don't like them, your looking at the wrong bike!!!!

I have a buddy who thinks anyone working at a dealer knows everything about that product. He will believe anything a dealer employee tells him. Recently took his C-Vette in for tire repairs to the dealer, who charged him $106.00 to radial patch a tire. I pointed out this dealer did not have a tire changer capable of handling a run-flat tire and they beat his tire off and on with a hammer. He was OK because it must be acceptable as a dealer did it.
Taking the cooling system off a vehicle water cooled vehicle is stupid, no other comment needed.
