Question about a front wheel install and bearings.
« on: December 16, 2015, 02:57:12 PM »

Are both wheel bearings the same on a 2015 Street Glide with ABS?  Or is the abs bearing different?   Also is there anything different with changing the rim either on an abs wheel or non abs wheel.  I am swapping rims in front but never did on an abs bike. I see the wheel sensor on the left side. Just curious if it is a part of the spacer and will it just drop out once i pull the axle out.  Any special care needed?

It will not fall out. Not part of spacer. You need bearing puller toremove

The sensor is part of the left spacer, and you need to be careful how you handle it and also don't damage the wires.  As for the bearings, the left side bearing has the encoder for the ABS sensor built in.  The right side bearing does not, and is a different part number.

If you plan on doing work on your bike, I'd highly recommend buying the shop manual and supplemental CVO manual.  Harley's manuals are pretty good, and relatively inexpensive compared to most other vehicle manuals.  They are well worth the price even if someone doesn't plan to work on the bike, just for reference.

Are you saying i need to replace the bearing?  The rim is a brand new takeoff.  Maybe 10 miles on it when the wheel was removed.  Bearing should be new.  My plan was to remove my stock rim (has abs) and install the new rim (has abs).  I wasent planing on replacing any bearings.

I'm not aware of any requirement to replace the bearings as long as you don't damage them during removal, but there again that's where having the manual comes in handy.  If you had a significant number of miles on them, I'd recommend installing new ones in the new rim just because the H-D bearings haven't been all that reliable for many folks.  What is the plan for the take-off rim?  If you plan to reuse it in the future or sell it to a buddy, why not leave the stock bearings in place and install new ones in the new rim?  Just a thought.  And I'm assuming here, since you didn't really specify, that the new rim doesn't have bearings installed and you were planning to remove the ones from the stock rim and install them in your new rim.  If not, and the new rim came with the correct bearings installed (make sure they are the correct bearings for an ABS system), then ignore all the comments about replacing bearings.

In case you need the info, these are the H-D part numbers and MSRP prices.  You can also find the proper bearings in the aftermarket.

Left Side:    P/N  9252   BALL BEARING w/ encoder, ABS   $30.40

Right Side:  P/N  9276A   BALL BEARING   $21.11

Grc did you read my post.  I am not swapping bearings. The rim I bought has the original bearings and the wheel has 10 miles on it as it is a new take off.

So now I understand the abs sensor is the spacer for the left side.

If swapping a tire you have to consider what side the bearing is on relative to arrow for rotation, but if tire is staying on new rim everything should be fine.

If the new wheel already has correct ABS style bearings, then of course you don't have to swap bearings.  Sorry if I misunderstood the question.
