Air Cleaner Mod
« on: December 21, 2015, 11:44:16 AM »

I noticed that the black paint had come out of a couple of the grooves, so I cleaned out the rest of them and went with a new color.  I also replaced the black plastic insert under the screen.

I know for certain that the dealer was responsible.  I am guessing they got some sort of solvent on the cover when cleaning the A/C element, because I used acetone and the paint came right out.  FWIW they did offer to warranty the A/C, even though they wouldn't cop to the damage.  In the end, it wasn't worth it, because I could easily repaint it back to normal, and I had decided to try something new instead anyway.

I wonder why the MoCo doesn't offer color inserts for these because your modification shows just what a touch or additional color can do to enhance.  Looks great, sarge.

Looks great!    :2vrolijk_21:

The HD air filter is paper and properly cleaned with soap and water after removal and disassembly.  So, I doubt the dealer would have used acetone.  Just thinking out loud, so to speak.    :nixweiss:

True.  I am sure they just washed it per normal, but somewhere along the line they did something that made the accent paint fall out.  And I think they cleaned / covered it up.  It was just too clean.  I used acetone for the intact color insets and after the initial "dissolve" I still had to wipe it out.  Then again, the paint is kind of "plasticy", so maybe it did just peel out as one on its own.

No worries.     I just mentioned the acetone as a way to clean them up if anyone felt like doing the same.  The insert behind the screen is just a plastic report binder cut to fit.
