103"Conversion
« on: January 27, 2007, 11:34:47 AM »

Quick question. If a dealer is going to install a 103" conversion, how would you know they did the work (installed new barrels and pistons), if the deal is the dealer keeps the original parts? Is there a way of identifying the larger barrels? Any other way to identify this? My friend's trying to find out if he got ripped off on his new Street Glide. Bike was supposed to come with the 103" upgrade and remap, but the dealer keeps the parts. Don't know what kind of HD remap they were giving him either. Do all HD ECM remapping leave the info for the DT to read? Can he go to another dealer and hook up to the DT to find out what's in his motor? This is a brand new bike, so he hasn't ridden it prior to the "upgrade or picked it up yet. This dealer is "throwing in 103" Upgrade for free to help move more bikes. We're trying to find out if he got scammed.

TIA for any help. Hoist! 8-)

Howie,
Found on the MoCo website - Screamin' Eagle® Big Bore Stage I Kit for EFI Models - 1690cc, and Screamin' Eagle® Street Legal Big Bore Stage II Kit for EFI Models - 1690cc which gives details on what is included w/both of these kits. Looks like one comes w/cams and one w/o cams. However both require an ECM recalibration so it should be able to be identified w/the DT.

Does he know whether they are going to do the Stage 1, or Stage 2 kit?

You could also talk to Spiderman as he just did the 103ci upgrade to "Los Dragon".

The external dimensions of the jugs remain unchanged from the stock pieces so you can't tell by looking from the outside.  The DT will reveal what map has been installed.

Thanks guys, they were using the kit without the cams. They told him, as the catalog says, that they did an ECM recalibration. My understanding is there are no "downloads or Flashes" for '07 engines. SERT of Race Fueler are the 2 HD products to recalibrate the ECM. Is this correct? He should see the black box (SERF) or get software and the key (SERT). Thanks. Hoist! 8-)

"ECM recalibration" could be a flash only and not require a SERF or SERT. I did notice something in the specs of the kit he's getting and unsure what this means "All models require ECM calibration. (priced separately). E.O. pending for '07 models"? What's E.O.? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

In the past there have been just flashes that could be done for "Stage 1" upgrades. Most people opted to go w/either a PC or SERT as they had more then likely planned more upgrades/mods down the road and justified the extra expense then, as something that would be needed later.

I wasn't sure what they meant by that either. I thought I read here somewhere that there are no "flash" recalibrations for '07's. That it's SERT or SERF only from HD. The only flash I heard about was that recall to knock out the rear cylinder when it gets too hot. If they are doing a flash recalibration, why is everyone wondering what to do with the PC, if you need to remove it? You'd then at least have a Stage I flash to fall back on. I don't think that's the case on '07's. Anyone? Hoist! 8-)

Hoist,
Just checked the '07 SE Parts Catalog and they are showing some "ECM Recalibrations" for '07 Touring models (page 23 of 91 of the downloaded manual). Don't see what appears to be one for the kit he is getting, but this would appear that they have/will have downloads/flashes for the ECM. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

They are actually showing this "ECM Recalibration" there also...

110 CI Stage I Race Free Flowing Exhaust (requires 110" kit for Non-CVO Models)
(2007 FLHTCUSE2, FLHRSE3)

Take this info w/a grain of salt we all know sometimes what the MoCo prints isn't actually what is true/available. ::)

Hey d00d, my '07 SE Pro Racing Parts Catalog only goes up to P.86. P.20 & 21 list SE EFI Performance Configurations. You're right, they don't show one for that kit. Closest is 103CI High Output, but he has stock cams (don't know what they use on a stock 96").

Also, they show a Stage I Race recalibration for 110 CI '07 SE. This, I imagine should be used as a fallback if a PC fails and needs to be removed. Is the PC even necessary with just the addition of Performance Mufflers?

Are these recalibrations "flashes", downloaded by HD dealers, without SERT or SERF? Does a Stage I flash void the warrany? I imagine it leaves it's imprint in the ECM, but does it void warranty. Are we on to something here that no one realized before? Am I missing something here? Why have people been saying there are no '07 downloads?

Anyone have a handle on this? It's very confusing! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Ok, walk this through. What do we always tell new folks that want to get a little more from their motor without spendin a ton of money ?

Stage I breather kit, free flowing exhaust and PC, SERT or at the least re-map of stock ECM

No mention of exhaust mods so more air in without a way of more air out equals what ?  And why in hell would they want the stock parts ? When was the last time anyone anybody knows took their bike in to have a complete top end done using the original stock OEM part numbers ?

This whole deal smells

BB,
What you mentioned about the exhaust had me re-read the specs for the kit again. I'm not disagreeing w/what you are saying, but the kit says upgraded exhaust isn’t needed. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Screamin' Eagle® Big Bore Stage I Kit for EFI Models - 1690cc

This Big Bore Kit lets you increase the displacement of your Twin Cam 96-equipped model from 96 cubic inches (1584cc) to 103 cubic inches (1690cc). Includes Big Bore cylinders, Big Bore flat top pistons, rings, clips, and a Stage I Air Cleaner Kit with one-piece backplate, integral breathers, all mounting hardware, and gaskets. A high performance clutch spring is included to provide the additional clutch capacity required by the extra power. Requires separate purchase of primary cover gasket. This kit is street legal when used with stock mufflers. (Not all components shown.) All models require ECM calibration. (priced separately). E.O. pending for '07 models.

From everything we've known from past in doing upgrades like this you would think as you mention that it would require an upgrade in exhaust. Also just because the MoCo is saying that "the kit is street legal when used with stock mufflers" isn't necessarily the best combination for the bike. [smiley=confused5.gif]

In regards of them keeping the take-off parts only reason I can see them wanting to do that is to resell them, and/or bore the cylinders out and use them on the next upgrade. Since it sounds like this upgrade/promotion is done on brand new bikes there wouldn't be any concern on excessive mileage on the parts.

There were no flashes initially for the 07's, and I was told today they are still not available, so I don't know what they are doing.  The old way of doing the flash was via a "cartridge" or DT download to the ECM and did not require a SERT interface.  If they did a flash, there will be a part number for it...I'd tell your friend to ask for what part number they loaded in his bike.  The 103 kit appears to be just jugs and nothing else.  Spiderman would be able to tell you more about this, as he did this mod to his "false Pumkin"  ;)  One thing I don't understand is why he's not getting the take off parts from the 96"...he bought them.  I'd want my take off parts...

He's using SE Street performance Touring Mufflers. Not sure if they're one piece or w/ the separate endcaps. the deal smells because this is their promotion to get you to buy a bike from them. HD has added 4 new dealers in NYC and LI in the past few years. There's stock TC88 and TC96 bikes everywhere around here. They need a gimmick now. I'm trying to catch them or make sure my buddy got what he was promised! Thanks. Hoist! 8-)

Interesting thoughts.  How would you know they did the upgrade, if you don't get the original parts?  Hmmmm, I never thought of that.  I got an email add from Woodstock HD and they are offering the same thng, (free 103 upgrade on all instock 07 96's), till Jan 31st.  I just thought that sounded like a good way to get people in to buy bikes during a traditionally slow time of the year, but now, I wonder....hmmmmmmm :-?
