Interesting thoughts.  How would you know they did the upgrade, if you don't get the original parts?  Hmmmm, I never thought of that.  I got an email add from Woodstock HD and they are offering the same thng, (free 103 upgrade on all instock 07 96's), till Jan 31st.  I just thought that sounded like a good way to get people in to buy bikes during a traditionally slow time of the year, but now, I wonder....hmmmmmmm :-?

That is the gimmick Red, but how do you know you got it? The $64K question! :o I bought my '03 RK at Woodstock HD, NY. They couldn't get me my SERK though. Trying to find the scam here now! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Do you know if this upgrade will come w/a dyno run/tune after break-in? That would be one way to tell if you have what they say. Numbers should be different from a 96ci to 103ci.

No d00d, but I told him to go to my dealer and I'll have my guy hook him up to the DT. My buddy, who's tuning my bike, will Dyno him at 1K mi. That seems to be the only way of knowing. Sounds like it could be a good bait and switch scam. Gotta keep these guys honest! ;) Hoist! 8-)

d00d's got a good point.  The dyno would tell, as the numbers would/should be different.  I would think that it's probably legit, because if it got out that they were just pulling a scam, they could be hit with false advertising, and also be hit with specific perfomance, meaning they promised one thing and didn't deliver.  So there would be legal ramifications, plus the reputation of the dealership is on the line.  (unless that already sucks).   But it does make you wonder.

Has this guy seen the bike before the upgrade was done?  Visually, the only way I know to do this would be to have a knowledge of the bike before the mod is done.  When I had my Ultra upgraded to 95", the headgaskets looked different, and the gasket between the rocker boxes and the heads looked different when viewed from the exhaust port side of each head.  I had my jugs bored, and there were things about them only I would know.  I got my old jugs back, but they had been cleaned very well.  Other than having detailed knowledge of the bike before hand, dyno numbers and a DT scan appear to be the only way to tell if the mod was done.

I just had a thought.... What about a piece of scotch tape stuck somewhere out of site, but would be able to determine if the heads had been removed?

Torque Stripe would work too.  Would be easy to apply the stuff to the back side of both exposed head bolts as well as the one head bolt visible from the exhaust side of each head.  But all that would prove would be that the head bolts had their torque broken......which would lead to other issues............

Another way to see if anything has been wrenched on , dab some of the wife's or daughter's finger nail polish on the fastners that would have to be removed and see if the polish has been rubbed off.

HOIST I think the reason the dealer kept the parts was. The cylinders can be rebored and reused for the same package. The only thing the dealer is out is 140.00 for the rebore 149.00 in pistons and about 59.00 in gaskets and 150.00 for the reflash(these are list prices) and 4 to 6 hours in labor. Total cost to the dealer making 5 grand on the bike sale plus financing is less than 700.00. So it is a deal for everyone involved.

Your buddy got the big bore upgrade and dealer moved another bike.

Thanks a lot Mike. That seems to make the most sense. I believe what they did was a street legal mod, not an HP mod, allowing him to keep his 7 year warranty nationwide. We are going to check it with DT somewhere else to confirm what's in there. But your explanation makes the most sense. If these guys got busted for not doing the work, it would be far more costly from the black eye they'll get to their reputation, than the cost of the mod. I wasn't aware of downloads for '07's , but evidently they are available. I know he did the exhaust too. I don't know how they do a street legal download for that application. But if it's street legal like the 110", then he'll still need to do some type of ECM mod anyway!

It's 40 deg F here in NYC right now. I'm taking my new SERK out east to meet him. We've both got some breaking-in to do. Ride safe everyone! If you've got the weather today, enjoy the ride!!! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Howie,
I guess we had our day in the sun yesterday.  Today sucks!!! It's raining and may possibly turn to snow later on...jeez..what's up with this weather?  Isn't everyday supposed to be a nice day?  I guess it's just another good day to go out and shine up the ride.

Hoist have a great ride today.

I would be very confident that the work was done. Remember one thing though. The download that the dealer did was a street legal download. So the A/F will be right where the EPA wants it to be.

Your friend is now ready for some new fuel injection mangement after the first 1000 miles.

Dawg, you were 100% correct about the whole 103" conversion. The dealer explained it almost exactly as you did. You can see that the rocker box, exhaust and intake hardware was clearly removed, they did the SE A/C, and the heavier clutch spring. He also insatlled the SE Street Performance, 1 piece Touring Mufflers. Those mufflers sound real close to my stock 4-1/2" mufflers on the 110" pretty quiet). I wouldn't have gone that route myself. He got his money's worth though and so did the dealer, I guess. I put some Pics up under the Pictures Section with my bike. He definitelty needs to do ECM mods now though. Thanks Mike! ;) Hoist!
