Potential hazzard - Fork Lock knob/Key Fob
« on: December 23, 2015, 10:20:13 PM »

FYI - Potential hazard - 2016 CVO Road Glide - FLTRUSE

After fully rotating the fork lock knob to the unlocked position and starting the bike and while leading my group down the road the "Forked Locked" message scrolled across the odometer and the engine shut down in traffic.  Luckily, the forks didn't lock and I was in the far right lane and could safely navigate the bike to the shoulder.  After messing with the lock knob (Lock to Unlock) and the key fob (Lock to Unlock) I finally got the "fork locked" message to disappear and the starter engaged. However, after a few minutes on the bike I made a turn to get off the main road, bam, it happened again. Not wanting to take anymore risks I had the bike towed to my local shop.  After some lengthy "haven't seen this before" and "this shouldn't happen" discussions, replacing the Key Fob battery seemed to remedy the situation and I was able to get home. However, my confidence level that this was just a battery prob and wouldn't happen again was very low. I have contacted HD about this because I believe it could be a serious problem. If I had been riding on a nice twisty at 60+ MPH with my group and this occurred things might have been different.    :(

Sounds like a serious safety defect that could get someone killed, and I'd suggest you not only contact H-D Corporate but also NHTSA.

Glad it happened when it did, could have been a disaster. I'm with you on their answer.......how could the battery cause that??? Bad FOB itself I might could buy. At least they couldn't use 'they all do that'

No competent engineer would design a system such that it would shut the engine down on a moving vehicle just because it got a signal that the fork was locked.  So I'm not buying that BS from the dealership either.

You sure... we are talking about MoCo Engineer's. (sorry to any here that may be Engineers, or even MoCo Engineer's but that was just to easy to pass up). :smartass: :wiseguy: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

That dealer is full of chit and the reason I say is just how many of us have driven away with the key on the toolbox or left it in the garage ect on the 14 and ups lol the only thing that happens is in the odometer window it says NO FLOB and that's it

I just picked up a 2016 CVO Limited and as the owner of the dealership was going over the bike with me he was having trouble with one of the fobs in he could only get it to unlock and nothing else, he changed the battery and it did work but after I got it home had the same trouble. Luckily the 2nd one worked ok, went to their Christmas party and called prior so they could take a fast look, turns out the batteries in both are loose so svc mgr got them to work by shimming/dielectric grease and is ordering 2 new fobs under warranty

While I understand my 2011.5 doesn't have the same connectivity to the on-board diagnostic messages on these newer versions... I'm still running with the factory batteries in both of my key fobs.  In fact, the spare hasn't left the drawer it was placed in since I brought the bike home.  I check it now and then to make sure it works, but that's it.

Have the key fobs now become a critical part of the bike's operation?  If so, I think based on stevesg's comment... they need to be made to accept properly fitted batteries.

The first thing I do to any bike new or other, is to reprogram the security code for a manual override. In the event of a Battery failure in the Fob, or me forgetting something like riding off and leaving the Fob on the workbench I can always get it started.
Instructions are in the Owners manual, its really not that hard to do. Wont eliminate the fork lock problem, but if the Fobs have a battery fitment problem and are intermittent may come in handy sometimes.

I guess I should stop hitting the lock button to lock the bags before I ride off?
I do that because I have the tendency to stop and run into a store real quick without hitting the lock button. First time having the power lock feature and used to only unlocking/opening the bag(s) when needed.

I replace the batteries in all my FOBs every three years no matter what (spares as well). The symptoms I usually see when the batteries begin to go are that the FOB has to be much closer to work.  When I start to see that I replace the batteries. I have replaced the battery in my 2014 already because the lock/unlock was being difficult to always activate. The bike was about 1.5 years old at the time.

Thanks for the responses. My RGU will be in for a total diagnostic after the 1st of the year to find out what happened.  I will post the results after I get them.  Until then, have a safe, healthy and happy New Year!

I hit lock on dash all the time while riding to keep tour pak and saddlebags closed. Never had the forks locked message unless the lock was turned by hand on steering head.
Shutting off motor would be bad enough but if forks could lock without turning knob there would be a major problem.

Sounds to me like the sensor for the fork lock switch is the issue.

The forks will not lock unless the switch is turned all the way and the bars are all the way left.

If you lock with the dash switch or fob, then turn the switch to lock the forks do not lock, at least not on my 15 SERGU.

They only time I have ever seen a fork locked message is with the fork switch in the locked position.  Which is why I believe the issues is in the micro switch or sensor that tells the bike where that fork lock switch is.  It will give fork locked if the unlock is press but the switch is not turned.

I  believe it would be extremely hard to get the forks to lock when riding the bike, unless you turn the fork to the turn stops.
