It depends on who you plan to have tune it.  A good tuner can take a brand new just assembled engine and break it in on the dyno before doing the tune without hurting the engine.  That 1000 mile number is just that, a number.  It doesn't exactly have a scientific basis, and I think it has it's origins in the 1000 mile first service recommended by Harley.

Hopefully you will take the time to find a good full time professional tuner.  If you do, versus just handing the bike to your local dealership, you wouldn't have had to ask this question.  Be forewarned, a lot of people have let their dealer "tune" their bikes and come away with not much more than a canned map and a couple pulls on the dyno.  That is not a real tune.

Heath knows what he is doing , he told you that it needed 1000 miles or someone else. As he builds them and tunes them right there. We do the same build and right on the drum for break in and tune

No a dealer told me 1000 miles before they dyno tune

That's because very, very few dealerships have a "real" tuner.  Go take it to somebody that makes a living truely tuning.

A lot of wisdom and experience on this forum.....take heed.  :2vrolijk_21:

With EFI I feel the 1000 mile thing is death in the end.. As with a carb they would toss in a jet kit or a few larger jets and the carb will add fuel etc as its just a simple suction device. Still not the best way ,...  But with EFI its a NO NO to run an untuned engine period. The old myth run it richer.. thats a great way to wash down the rings and they will be so worn that it will use oil in a short time, run it lean and you create enough heat that you can hurt the temper on the oil control rings , distort the cylinder due to too much heat .  Load base map , have bike tuned . :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

So if I bought a used cvo with 5000 miles on it all stock first thing that should be done is a tune? Other wise I am just wearing out my engine life?? Will a canned tune work till I get my header and slip ons?  TTS is what I am looking at getting

I am speaking of changing parts. Yes if you change head pipe mufflers and a/c the bike will need adjustment in the AFR range

If you ask 5 different builders the proper break in procedure you'll probably get 6 different answers lol. I dint disagree with Steve about his methods but here's what I prefer to do in my shop.  After a build and heat cycles I put the bike on my dyno, I give it a quick tune up to 4000 RPM's and turn it over to the customer for 500 miles then I do the final tune.  I'm not saying that immediately going to the drum for a full tune doesn't work, is just not my way. My way hasn't failed me for many years so I'm not about to change it lol.  I will make an exception though, for people traveling far.  I have a bike in right now for a 107 build from 500 miles away.  For him I built it, put the break in tune on it and then I put 100 miles on tyre bike in 10mile increments with a cool down in between then final. Tune it.  I dint get into the whole drop your stock bike off today, get a hotel room and pick it up built and full tuned tomorrow. Again, not criticizing anybody else ways, it's just not how I chose to run my shop.

I have done the same with two bikes, from East TN, and fully agree!  Joe, another member has also done the same with a few bikes.
