« on: January 29, 2007, 06:38:53 AM »

Ok, I have rode my 1986 softail for 18 years,,,,the horn button back then was located 2nd button in on your left handleber,,I have now owned my screamin eagle road glide for 4 years and the horn button is the first button on left side handlebar......I am still fumbling with the button after all this time...after 18 years it is an unbreakable habit..If I cross country I do eventuly get used to it but when I get back on my 86,its the same story...I need to have the buttons in the same location b/4 I go nuts (or be alittle late on the horn)..figured it would be best to convert my 86'..but not poss....any suggestions or simular issues,,,thanx, headpan

Why can't you change the 86?  I'd think that you could get a later set of controls and other than having to change the electrical connection end to mate with the 86 harness, you'd be fine.  What am I missing?

I knew later yaer controls would fix the issue,,,,I was trying to avoid replacing everything.....i did remove the button housing on the 86' and it looked like you could'nt swap-em...kinda like 1 unit.....just curious if anyone else had noticed the same issue and had a cheap fix....headpan

HP, it made sense that they changed it with the later style controls. I aways wondered why they gave you closer access to the Hi Beam switch instead of the horn. I have fairly loud pipes on the '85 and try not to be behind anyone. As long as you're out front, there's no one in your way! ::) But seriously, I think you have to change controls if you want to do that. I never checked, but can you flip them upside down and remount them? I just chose to live with it. ;) Hoist! 8-)

Is there some reason you couldn't cut the wires away from the switches and splice them to the other switch.  I know that's not the best approach but it may achieve what you're after.

When I looked at them this morning, it seems that you can't flip them upside down either, so that's out. Bob's idea to rewire the switches, even though the labels on the button will be wrong, sounds like the only way. Hoist! 8-)

Isn't the Hi/Lo Beam switch a 2 position switch & the horn a spring loaded return switch???
What would be worse, having to hold the switch on for hi beam or having the horn on constantly until you toggle it back???
