The stock tire is a 180/65 B 16 81H and the rim is 5.00 inches wide.  I'm not aware of a wider tire that will work with that narrow a rim.  When trying to determine alternatives to the stock tires, you need to look at load rating and rim width.

From what I see that's a 140 width and Iv read 150 is certain and 160 has been done but it's tight and pitched in on the rim ,, is matching tire thread the best corse  of action also

Oops, sorry about that.  I was looking at the specs for the 2009 and later models, not the 2008.  The stock tire for the 2008 was a MU85B16  77H on a 3.00 x 16 inch rim, which is equivalent to a 140.  And yes, many have gone with a 150 without problems.  I would still recommend you check the load rating and recommended rim width of any 150 tire you consider.  Looking at offerings from Dunlop, a 150 can be used on a 3.00 inch rim but a 3.50 inch is recommended, and when you go to a 160 that rim requirement jumps to 4.00/4.50".  The actual width of a typical 150 versus the stock tire is going to be between .25 and .50 inches wider btw.  Stock is 5.5" wide.  Do you have a brand preference?  If you prefer to stick with Dunlop, they do offer 150-16's in their American Elite series that would fit the rim and be of the correct load rating.

On my bike I changed the rear 402 to an Elite 3 (with a similar tread pattern to the late model bikes) before changing the front tire and didn't notice any ill affects.  Usually I'd recommend buying tires as a matched set, but in my case it wasn't a problem mixing them for awhile until I got around to also changing the front to an Elite 3.

Typically, the rear tire tread is different than the front tire tread, and typically you should run the same brand of tire on front and rear.
Just sayin'.

Jerry, do you have a preference between the American Elite and the Elite 3?

I haven't tried the American Elite yet, that will probably be what I use next time though.  If you look at the specs for the standard MU tire for both the E-3 and the American Elite, the one obvious difference is that the American Elite uses the late model Multi Tread design.  In theory that should reduce tread wear (higher tire mileage), but I've not heard anything one way or the other yet about cupping, which has been an issue on the late model CVO M-T tires.

I've run the American Elite for the past year and a half.  Hands down the best tire I've put on my bike.  Great in the rain.  Best wear of any tire I've run, by far.  My next tires will also be American Elite.

I'm running Avon Cobra's now that I'm happy with for handling and ride, but might try the American Elite's next time around as they have a thin white wall option. I ran the Elite 3's on my '06 Ultra and liked the handling, but the front tire didn't hold air pressure and the rear ended up cupping. My first set of tires on my current '08 CVO Ultra were Metzler 880's that handled well, but I had a tread separation on the rear tire so will never run those again.

The front tire didn't hold air???  That would be a problem..

I ran Metzler 880's twice, and chunked the rear tire each time.   :(

last Sunday I put new front and rear American Elite's on my 2010 FLHTCUSE5.

Will check the mileage I get on these and will post when they need replacing .

130/80B17 BW front  $219.99

180/65B16 BW rear   $289.99

Will post pictures this weekend of them.

Got over 31,000 on the rear tire.... a lot better than my 7,000 regular replacement.
