Thinking about full air ride for my 2015 FLHXSE....
« on: January 24, 2016, 01:54:09 PM »

I have thre privilege of not living to far from DD Custom cycles.  I went to the shop yesterday and got a nice air ride demo.  I can believe how cool the whole system is.  Needless to say, a few of his customers were there and they said it's a night and stay difference!  I have a tentative appointment for mid March.  He uses Legend rear shocks and air Pistons for the front.  He also includes an electric center stand as well.

What's the general consensus of air ride?  I'm excited just for the cool factor!

I run front and rear air, different parts than what you described. I really like air ride. I've been running rear air since somewhere around 2002. I went to front air two years ago and the only regret I have is not doing it sooner. For the last two plus years all of my riding has been with momma on the bike. Half of that time the TP is on the bike and we are loaded. Research the various air suspension offerings as there are several choices. I run a 5 1/2" rear travel shock and have 5" of travel in the front end with an air over oil setup. I run two air tanks with a 200psi switch for instant up air, one under the fender and one under the left bag. The compressor is a ViAir 380 hidden behind my fender.

A couple of years ago, Legend changed their rear air shocks to a larger "bladder," which was supposed to give a better ride when solo.  I know my older Legends are harsh when solo, but smooth out nicely 2-up.

The air ride is cool, but it tends to leak between rides, so you have to adjust it each time.  A pressure gauge might make that easier.  Also, note that you are increasing the complexity of the system, with more weight and more opportunities for things to malfunction.  If you like to work on the bike continuously, it's no problem; if you just like to get on and ride, well...

Oh, and center stands tend to drag over speed bumps and when leaning hard in turns and corners, and they can be in the way when you jack up the bike.  Want to guess how I know these things?

I tried the air rout for a short time, The system i used is Arnott's latest and greatest with adjustable rebound well i still have them but they live in the box they came in.

To hard way to hard, i tried everything to improve the ride quality i ride my bike hard and enjoy the turns, i recon the air set up would kill me one day.

I now use Ohlins. WOW, WOW, WOW  what a difference, bloody fantastic, its almost unbelievable how you can have a bike of this size and handle so well.

I guess if you want to look cool with the up and down thing go for it, but if you ride your bike in the turns and bumpy country roads, Don't go air...

Sorry to put your fire out, but i have $2,000 worth of crap i cant use  >:(

I have a home made air system on the rear of mine and it's fantastic. I have a great deal of experience with shocks so I do know the difference. Anything with "air" over "spring" will not be the same.

Legend recently changed there air bag supplier and air shock design. Legend is a great company. American made suspension with a Lifetime warranty. IMHO, the only good reason for going with air suspension is because you want that super low look along with the ability to raise the bike at the flip of a switch. I went with Legend Revo coil over shocks and the new Legend AXEO front suspension. Love the way my bike rides and handles. Go to the Legend web site and check out all the options. They show all kinds of air suspension accessories.

I agree.  :2vrolijk_21:

I had the original Legends, Arnott Aldan adjustables, Arnott Bilstein and homemade.

Homemade has been the best followed by the Arnott Bilstein's.

I tried 3 different air shocks. They all leaked after 10k miles. There is the constant checking the pressure. Never Again.  To be fair mine were closed systems no bulky compressor.

The kit I want uses legend shocks with a life time warranty, so if I do go this route, I'm confident with this kit....
