30 tooth sprocket change
« on: January 31, 2016, 07:52:59 PM »

Hi. Does anyone know if the swing arm of the dyna models has to be modified like the baggers to be able to fit the 30 tooth sprocket and still use the oem belt. Thanks
Edit::
The bike is a 2008 cvo dyna.

Smee,

Sorry no one has given you an answer, but from what I've read, all of the 30t mods have been done to touring bikes.  Mine included.

I did the swingarm welding at home and lengthened the slot .2".  I have plenty of room left over.

What I would recommend is this, check the belt length you currently use with whatever your stock sprocket is now using.  To do the mod, you need a belt with one tooth less, at least on a touring bike that's what you need.

Then see if HD has a belt one tooth less that they use on your bike or another model.  If so, I would feel confident that you could do the swap and then not need to do the swingarm mod.

I'm not sure though what drive / driven is used on a Dyna, as I'm sure it's not the same as a touring bike, at least not the rear sprocket.  All late model Big Twins have the same primary and trans gearing with the Cruise Drive, but I would "guess" that the Dyna has a bit lower sprocket setup than a touring bike, but that's just a guess.

Thanks Dan, looks like I'll have to get under the bike and find out what I have, then see which way to go, for all I know it may already have the 30 tooth sprocket from the factory. Will keep you posted. Thanks again.

I believe stock is 32t and the rear changed by 2 teeth in 2009. 07 and 08 had higher gearing But I think the front belt pulley is 32 on all since 2007. Someone who knows way more than me may chime in and correct me.

Smee, I was reading your post and I have some info on this subject . It may not apply directly to your bike, but I want to put it out there. When I had my Heritage with a S&S 107 I put a 30 tooth front pulley on it. It basically changed everything by about 10 MPH. This may not help you too much but I think if you end up dropping two teeth you will be coming out of first before you get thru an intersection. Like your Dyna. That will be my next bike when I am done touring. CAHDBIKER
