New poster... new to me bike 03' SERK
« on: February 01, 2016, 10:59:52 AM »

I just purchased a 2003 SERK with 20k on the odometer.  Seems to be completely original from HD.  I'd like to freshen her up a little bit.  What is the first thing you would do?   I'm coming off of a worked up 98' Heritage.   It'll be used for one up touring most of the time.  I'd call myself a fairly aggressive rider.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

drop in cam?  SE 204  TW37? change to gear drive while there?  Will I need a tuner when switching cams?

Swensos,
If I were doing it, I would send the heads out to John Sachs in FL  (also a member here) or Jim Leebo (MegaFlo) in PA have them cleaned up and decked and set compression to 10 to 1, drop in a S&S 570 cam, go 10 over on the pistons and have the cylinders cut to match the pistons.   Put in new lifters (S&S) premiums, new chain tensions, S&S pushrods and tubes, new cam bearings and a 50mm throttlebody (yours has a 43mm if it is stock).   The 4.35 injectors you have will work.   Many of the builds like this are producing roughly 110-118 torque, and 100-105 hp with a decent exhaust.   Compression releases are also a possibility as a fail safe for you.

This is a tried and true package and keeps you with your ride ability and reliability.   its not a noisy top end or valve train beater like some of the quick closing intake cams out there.
Please note if you didnt already know this that your 103 has Hemi heads not bathtubs.   The SE 103 Motor that was used from 2003 - 2006 was/is different from late model 103 we see today.

If the crank supports it I would go gear drive, and yes you will need a tuner :)   For a tuner I would go to BlackHills Ken @ Blackhills Custom Parts in Rockaway NJ.  he also does all the motor work there.  super guy if your needing a mechanic and tuner.

Congrats on your new ride and good luck with your build.

I have a 2003 SERK that I did S&S 570 gear drive cams in many years back.  That was all I did and had it tuned with a SERT and it dynoed at 100 hp and 108 torque.  About three yrs ago the flywheels slipped and I had to have that trued and welded so I had some head work done at the same time but don't think I gained much performance wise.

Thanks. This is more along the lines of what I was thinking.  I don't want to be too far away from the stock cvo set-up.  How are the factory SE pipes?

I've had Rinehart true duals on it since the beginning.  For the first couple of years after the cams I only used a Techlusion Tfi for fuel, then finally got an SERT to have it tuned.  The Tfi worked fine other than I picked up a little pinging aroung 26-2800 rpms when cranking on the throttle in high gear.  Other than that I got great mileage and it ran fine.  Has about 60,000+ miles on it now and I wouldn't be afraid to ride it anywhere.
