Did I Figure It Out
« on: February 05, 2016, 12:10:33 PM »

On several occasions I have saw the term 'climate controlled garage' used on these pages. As a poor country boy I knew if I didn't shovel the cow's stalls for awhile the temperature would be higher......but so would the stinkafacation. Was out at the scooter's home this morning and think I might have stumbled on the real meaning of 'climate controlled' at least for us poor white trash. Thoughts?

For use when you are there maybe.......but portable space heaters are responsible for many garage/house fires. I'm sure the fire department members/retirees would know more then me though about safety concerns around gas tanks and other flammable things.
Food for thought, about climate controlled garages is that for those who warm their garages and then park a car or truck that is a daily driver in snow season they may be speeding up corrosion of the underside of their car and assorted fuel, brake lines etc. since road salts and moisture collect underneath then melt once inside. Only way to avoid that would be to wash the underside of the vehicle frequently even in the winter. (I don't see most people doing that in reality.)
I guess for long term storage for bike riders in climate control would not be an issue?

Although posted with tongue-in-cheek, VaE is spot on. Space heaters cause many deaths each year. Mine is only on if I'm in the building, at that's to keep me from the shivers.........the scoot can take care of itself!!! :2vrolijk_21:

For some reason my garage is normally 50 degrees or warmer in the winter. I do have the 80 gallon gas water heater out there and there is a FROG that is heated and cooled. I also have a freezer and 3 refrigerators out there that generate heat when their compressors are running. My old bike is nice and comfortable. Of course the ol battery tender is plugged up to keep her ready to ride.

It gets cold here, on occasion it does get down to single digits down here and in the teens is not unusual. But the normal low is in the low 30's. Tonight's low 34.

And Hubbard, I keep the berry juice in the refrigerator in the barn. ;)

Nice!!!! That could be a betting idea than starting the bike and waiting till the garage gets warm before I start working on it. Wonder if I would still get that lightheaded feeling that saves on beer if I used your heater? Lol

I have always use a space heater. Of course I do live in GA. It doesn't take long to get a three bay garage comfortable. I use a big stand up fan in the summer.  They only run when I am working in the garage. I thought about getting something else to heat the garage. I recently saw a nice 240 volt unit that mounts up on the wall. I saw it in a service department and then at Northern.  I think I may go that route next year.

28 degrees outside this morning, 55 in the garage. I could do better if I put weather stripping on the sides of the doors. I may just do that.

Decided to go out and check the portable heater in the pump house. Good thing I did as the heater wasn't working. the plug was welded into the outlet on the extension cord. In checking the ground was broken somewhere in the 100 foot length. New cord and heater. ( 12/3 cord $ 80.00 ) Had the heater in the storage room. All is well and working. Cheap repair compared to  the other option, Freeze up.
