Lucky Guy
« on: February 07, 2016, 03:26:18 PM »

I have a 2014 CVO Limited that I bought in May of this year. It was the Dealer Owners bike. Very low mileage and completely stock. I added a D&D Fat Kat, T-Man A/C and a SEPRT. The bike now has 23500 miles on it and I decided to pull the motor apart and install cams and fix all of the problems that we have seen in past years. Well all went well till I opened the cam chest. This was the last thing I was going to take apart while the engine was on the frame. I pull the cover and see a few rollers laying in the bottom. The rear cam bearing had come apart. There didn't appear to be any damage. But I pulled the cases off the frame and will be dropping the oil pan. If I would have gone for just one more ride it would have been ugly. Well I was going to take this to 113 but I have decided to go to 117!!!!!! Yes I am one hell of a lucky guy.

Great timing....if everything else is ok, will be following your progress with your build. Loved riding in Western MD. I lived in So. Md for 30 years, now in SW Fl. Good luck with your build. Am thinking about doing one also with the 117 Kit. Still on the fence.

Mike,

Timing is everything.   Better to have caught it now than be out riding and find out the hard way.   117 seems to be an interesting proposition,   Good luck with the rebuild.   FWIW the S&S new camplate and pump are pretty nice.  :)

Harry I already have a complete Fueling set up. Cam Plate, Oil Pump and lifters. But FYI I am going with the 117 kit with the TD 24 cams. So we will see how it pans out. The heads will be setup by and for Zippers 657 cams just in case!!!!! LMAO!!!

Sounds like a nice setup. You should be happy with the 117. I sure am. Pulls like a locomotive. Very nice improvement over the 110

Mike,

It will be quite interesting to see what the extra 7 cubes do for the 24d's.    If the cams works anything like they do in the 110's there should be tons of smiles.   657's ran good for me too just a bit of valve train noise with them, but they are quiet compared to the 662-2 imo.

You are lucky!  I hope mine doesn't have this problem!  So far she is running strong. Looks like if I have an issue I should definitely move up based on the 117 feedback!

Funny you posted this. Zippers has a canned map for the Thundermax with the 117 kit with the 657's. I ordered the cams yesterday. I think I am going to try the Thundermax on the waterhead. If I don't like it I can always change. The only problem I may have is the headwork that is being done. I maybe should just stick with the 24d's and the race tuner. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

I caught one of my lifters failing riding home from Sturgis 3 or 4 years ago.  I was needing to stop for gas about every 120 miles by the time I got home.
Took it to the dealer the next day and the tech told me it was fine.
I took it home, tore it apart, and found the roller seized on the lifter.

In hindsight I wish I would have bought an extended warranty right then and there.
Then rode it until it blew up.

Then paid the difference and had an S&S 124 installed.

I like others have stated... buy aftermarket to fix my HD problems.

This is my last Harley.

Sorry I just read my last post and realized how negative it is.

I guess I was baffled how at 23,500 miles on a $40,000+ motorcycle you feel lucky that your lifter had failed...

But you are lucky you caught it... "IF" you are out of warranty.

If you were still in warranty then HD is lucky!
