SE 117 kit 259e cam with 10.5/1 compression any thoughts ?
« on: February 14, 2016, 11:43:43 AM »

Any thoughts increasing compression to 10.5 /1 with the SE 259e cam , or using the SE 585 cam with the Kit pistons 9.9 / 1.

IMO I wouldn't run any less than 10.5 for either cam choices

The SE585 is pushed there but can run there. The SE259E is very happy there.
It is for this reason I am making pistons that will have a small dome.

Will be some time before they are available i would think. Curious if there may be a approximate date give or take?
Thank.

So, with a compression bump into the 10.5:1 -10.8:1 range (with the 117 drop on kit) and a little headwork on the CVO heads what is the cam of choice?  R&R 615, GMR 600, Tman 590, TW 999-6, SE 585, S&S 585, etc.

the cam that comes with the kit will work very well at 10.8 compression.

So, you think a SE-259E cam with 0.579" lift is a good choice for reworked CVO heads (with 0.650" lift capable springs) is a good choice at 10.5:1 - 10.8:1 compression.  Interesting.

Thanks,

Each to there own. If you build around it like you would if want want it to perform it is good to go. Depends also what you want. There are lots of choices .

My 13 CVO King with the 110 engine with heads work by Don at Dewey's runs the 259E cam with 10.8 compression.  In my opinion a very good combination.

SAE Torque is at 100 at 2500 RPM, over 110 at 2750 rpm and 120 at 3750 until 5000 rpm.  5750 rpm is were torque goes below 110.  So a very nice torque curve.  Peak HP is 121.7 SAE.

I am really happy with the set up, runs smoother than stock, and better mpg with a lot more power.

Yeah, but a 117 is a lot more volume to fill in the same amount of time.  I am not sure the SE-259E (0.579" lift) takes advantage of ported heads on a 117.  With most headwork you will usually get at least 0.640" lift capable springs.  So, with headwork you will no longer be spring constrained with stock 0.585" lift capable springs.  Depending on how you want the bike to ride, I personally want a "torquey" feel, my research indicates a cam with an intake lift of ~0.585" to 0.615" is required to take full advantage of ported heads with the 117 kit.  There are a lot of cams out there that fall into this category.  Compression is also a large part of this equation.

Just My Opinion,

Which suppliers already have higher compression pistons ready for the HD 117 kit?

I personally want a "torquey" feel, my research indicates a cam with an intake lift of ~0.585" to 0.615" is required to take full advantage of ported heads with the 117 kit.

Your research is not correct because the lift is not that large of a factor, a fine tuning element only.
Duration, LC and LSA are more important
These numbers determine the intake close ABDC and exhaust open BBDC which will make or break how the bike feels on the street.
Research needs to be done very carefully and you usually receive "advice" as part of a sales pitch which can and usually is highly biased.
When a CVO 110 head flows 330 with good air speed and low lift numbers it is actually a bit oversized on a 110 cu/in motor with a peak of 6250 rpm. Still has overhead on a 117"

ok then, now my question is are the cylinders available for sale, or only in KIT form, also are there some over size(s) piston if needed for proper fitment of these cylinders that MAY need cleaned up? what comp ratios are available? thanx
