Vibration at highway speeds on 2016 FLHXSE
« on: February 17, 2016, 06:46:37 PM »

I picked up my CVO Street Glide about a week ago and have noticed a vibration at highway speeds (60-75mph).

It seems to come from under the seat or back of the bike and isn't real bad, but feels like I'm always on rough/uneven pavement.  I don't notice anything at lower speeds.  I came from a Road Glide Special and it was completely smooth, so I'm not sure if I'm just adjusting back to the batwing, or if something else is wrong. I had a 2013 Limited before the road glide and it always seemed smooth as well. I weigh about 205, so I have the shocks at 0 right now.

Maybe it is an out of balance tire or something?  I only have 200 miles on it and will ride a few hundred more this week, so if it still does it, I'll probably just take it in to the dealer.

Any suggestions?

Belt tension seems good at glance.  I'll check it with the belt tool when I can put it on the lift.

Maybe a bad tire or out of balance? Did you check tire pressure? I would get it checked ASAP since things like this don't usually go away on their own. And the bike is brand new!!!  Mine is smooth at speeds well above where you are having the problem.

By far the most likely cause is wheel and tire balance.  Look at the rim and see if it looks like any of the wheel weights have come off.

When you say the shocks are set on zero, I'd suggest that zero is not an appropriate setting for anyone over about 120 lbs.  Check the manual and set the preload correctly for your weight.

I was think wheel balance,  I don't see where any of the weights fell off.

The Street Glide has the manual shocks, not air.  The manual is set to have 0 turns on the shocks for anyone under 220 lbs.

I admit that sounded strange to me.....but I just checked my manual and yes..under 220lbs is 0 turns. I'm still on wheel balance or a bad tire.

It may not be visually obvious if wheel weights fell off.

You might also check other areas for vibration.....exhaust mounts, heat shield clamps, etc.

i'm thinking wheels/tires as well.  I did find some posts on another Harley forum with the same problem, and it went away after a few hundred miles.  Their guess was the rubber engine mounts had to break in or soften and everything smoothed out.  But, not everyone has that problem either, so we'll see.

I'm going to put a couple hundred more miles on Friday and if it's still there, I'll just take it to the dealer and have them check it out.

Just ran out and checked the exhaust mounts and they are good.  One thing I did notice was that one of the bolts on the solo seat wasn't all the way tight.  I wouldn't think that would do it, but you never know.

Side note....It's good pre caution to check both regularly, not uncommon of them backing out.
