Sarter issues
« on: February 22, 2016, 10:39:39 AM »

Need some advice all .Well got my FLHXSE all clean and ready for bike week hit the starter to fire it up and click, click, click. Though it was the battery but its the starter that is not engaging. Took the armature apart and the shaft and spring are all clean and free. Is there something else to look at or is the starter just shot?

Check the battery voltage and than see if the same voltage is at the starter solenoid, If there is a voltage drop than clean all connections at the battery + / - cables and neg cable to frame. Also check the small terminal for full 12  / battery voltage when disconnected from solenoid when pushing starter button.
If the voltage and ground are good, the contacts in the starter solenoid may be worn, these contacts look like 2 small C shapes and contact a larger disc. When these wear down they cause this click condition, I have seen them be worn down and look like a knife blade, when new they are about 1/16 inch thick.
If they are worn you can disconnect the battery, pull the starter to be able to removes the contacts and plunger for replacement, these are the most common cause for this type / gear reduction starter, and you can get the parts at a starter and alternator rebuilder shop

First, how do you know it isn't the battery?  Connect a good voltmeter across the battery terminals, make note of the battery voltage, then watch the voltage reading as you turn on the ignition and then when you push the starter button.  If the voltage immediately drops below 10 volts, your battery is probably shot.  A load test is the best way to determine true battery condition, and most places that sell batteries can do a load test for you.

If the battery is in fact good, and you don't have a voltage drop from the battery to the starter connection, then you may have a solenoid problem.  That can be repaired fairly easily, as mentioned by Wingman, and at a much lower price than a replacement starter.

Spot on advice. I had the same no start condition this past weekend, nice weather for a ride go out to the bike click,click,click...... put the battery on charge overnight and did the same test as Jerry suggests and wouldn't you know it the voltage dropped to almost nothing as soon as the start button was pushed. All my static Voltage checks were good, until that load was put on it.

2 year old Deka that died an early death and I'm certain my issue was caused when a dealer technician didn't correctly tighten down the battery negative terminal after a recent electrical repair.  Found that when I was trying to troubleshoot the no start...

New Battery and now everything checks out OK and got to take that ride, even if it ended up being Sunday instead of Friday...

I have a take off starter sitting on the shelf that I replaced with a high capacity 1.4kw starter on my 08 TR. If I bought a repair kit and clutch for the old starter to rebuild for a spare, what parts would be needed to make it a 1.4kw starter? I hope my question is clear. :nixweiss:

Been there, done that.  Exactly the same issue and mine was the battery.

Good question.  I assumed there would be a difference if I compared the parts lists of the starter from a standard 2008 touring model and a 2008 CVO touring model.  Strangely enough, the only obvious difference that popped up was the brush holder assembly.  You might want to try yourself and see if you notice something I didn't.

I've been looking at that, I was using the 09 cvo for comparison for some reason. I'll research it some more

rebuild kit is the same, clutch assembly also. maybe the armature assembly??
