Wiring handle bars
« on: March 04, 2016, 06:03:56 PM »

I am going with 10" bars on a 2012 CVO Streetglide, i am to the point of taking the wires out of the stock bars, I can't figure out how to get the wires out of the wiring plug that is inside the fairing so i can pull the through the bars. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You did not post a picture so I'm not 100% sure this is what you were asking. The wiring plugs that you are looking at are called Molex connectors. There are videos on YouTube where you can learn how to disassemble and reassemble them. If you don't have a service manual, take pictures of the wiring order and write it down! The connectors are very delicate and difficult to replace so be careful. A Molex tool is about 50 bucks online. I happen to have one if you need it.

Save yourself $50 for a molex tool!

I used a large paper clip to take the plugs apart.

Take your time or you will hate yourself, it's a tedious job!

Take pictures and take Notes Prior to taking the plugs apart. This will save you headaches later for sure. This way things should go well for you.

I've had decent luck using some larger gauge sewing needles too.  The point is a help.  It's still a slow tedious freaking chore.  Stock up on your swear jar coinage before you start.

for me its the old "having the right tool for the job" i'd rather have a $50 tool and not end up breaking something that will cost me far more then $50 to fix before i can put things back together.

While I generally subscribe to that theory a bit less so here.  With the needles I was never in danger of breaking anything; just not getting it apart as quickly.  Or at least I assume "as quickly."  Since it's something I've so far only needed very rarely the extra $50-60 expense just hasn't been justified.  If it was a daily production thing would certainly check alternatives.  For use once or twice a year; hardly worthwhile.

Photos are a great idea and also a vehicle specific manual helps.  When I did my mini apes I used a paperclip to release the tangs.

Thanks for the help everyone,I took pics of the wiring order and used a pick tool to release the wires,it wasn't bad but had help with pulling the wires out as i hit the retaining clip, now its time to fight the wires back through the new bars!

Tape a "leader line" to the bundle and lightly lubricate the inside of the handle bar with WD40 and pull thu.  Pull and feed at the same time.  Good luck.

Not sure what 10" bars you are using, but if the have 90 degree bends in them I had very good luck using a light weight chain such as a dog leash type chain to work through the handle bars to use as a leader for pulling your wires. If you have a vice or something to the effect to hold the bars helps too. Push and pull together and lub the wires.

I usually either buy or at least borrow the correct tool, as I have gotten older I have less patience, but the needle trick is very acceptable here. I would not buy the tool for this probably one time job. I have used a needle on several molex connectors over the last 6 or so years and never felt the need for a job specific tool.
