Garage Opener Problems
« on: March 07, 2016, 08:40:04 AM »

My 2015 CVO RGU garage door opener seems to have quit.  Does not appear to be recognizing signal from bike.  Do these things lose their link to the bike, is there a way to reset it?  If not is it a warranty item?  Not a huge deal as I just put a remote in the fairing storage compartment.  Have not dug into the owners or service manual yet to see if I can find anything.  Guess I'll start some type trouble shooting to be sure whats not working.

Finally found the process to reset the opener connection to the bike in owners manual and will try that later today.  Don't know how it got un-linked from bike..

Mine kept doing the same thing it had something to do with my new wall mount not being compatible with the HD control.  rather than give up the wall mount features I took a remote and wired a push button switch to it and threw it in my lower compartment and drilled the door for the switch.  Love it no failures and easy to use.

I found that when I unplugged the receiver for a while I would have to re-synch it to the transmitter.  Any chance you unplugged it or had a power outage? Other than that mine's worked fine.

Looked at it a bit today.  It had lost its sync between receiver and bike which I was able to re do with the owners manual but still wont open door.  Next to check wiring.

Ron, did it work previously?  Did you recently install a new garage door opener?  If it used to work fine and you haven't installed a new opener, then it's possible you have a wiring problem between the Harley receiver and the opener, OR the receiver itself is synced with your bike but it isn't switching the signal to the opener.  If you recently installed a new opener and it worked fine with the old opener but not the new one, that could be due to the design of many of the new openers.  If that's the case, let us know which opener you installed and there are workarounds.

To answer your original question, yes the opener transmitter and receiver are covered by your bike's warranty.

Jerry, I did replace the opener about a month back and it worked ok a few times. For openers I changed from the old Sears black button Rolling code to one of the new chamberlains. I did have to replace my older remotes. Sears closed all their stores near me so went with a hardware store chamberlain that was almost identical to my old unit making installations easier.  I'll check wiring of the HD receiver and if that does not get it going ill look into chamberlain makes a interface module for connecting older systems. Part of the reason for looking at the interface is our auto built in controls are not working either. Guess I should have investigated this problem before replacing the unit. Live and learn!

Confirmed wiring is good this morning but still no operation.  Also looked at their interface module which will work with my car homelink system but no way to use the HD receiver with it.  Called Chamberlain to ask and they say the older HD design receiver will not work with their new electronics.  Guess I'm stuck with either a remote in the fairing storage or a wired button as shown earlier.  Guess lesson learned be sure your getting the older electronics door opener if replacing you unit. Chamberlain calls the new electronics Security + 2.0 and older electronics just Security +.

What I don't understand is how the bike control worked right after installing the door opener.  I wired the new opener wall button in a day or two after installing the door opener and makes me wonder if the HD receiver works when that wall unit is not attached to the opener.  May try that just to find out.

If the problem is the new Chamberlain (they also make Sears and many other brands btw) opener, and I can assure you it is if you have one with the multifunction "smart" wall control, you won't need to buy anyone's solution if you don't want to spend the money.  Soldering the wires from the Harley receiver directly to the pins for the open/close switch in that wall control will solve the problem.

When I replaced my old Genie several years ago I ran into the same problem, both with the Harley and with the Homelink system in one of our cars.  The older Homelink systems aren't compatible with the latest rolling code standards used by the latest openers, but Homelink can supply a workaround that includes another separate receiver that you install in the garage to receive the signal from the car and then retransmit the correct signal to the actual opener.  In the wife's 2010 the added receiver makes the system very short range and touchy (dead spots in the driveway where it doesn't connect).  Just like the Harley system, the separate receiver for the Chamberlain works but it is no where near as good as just using one of the remotes that came with the new opener.

Response I received back in 2011 from Homelink about the problem:

Thank you for visiting our HomeLink website and for your inquiry.

We updated our code to ensure compatibility with the new line of Chamberlain/LiftMaster/Craftsman openers with MyQ/Security + 2.0 rolling code/Assurelink. However, vehicles that were manufactured before the latest version of Homelink was available will need a HomeLink Repeater to program the HomeLink to your new Chamberlain, LiftMaster or Craftsman opener.
Depending on the manufacturer and year of your vehicle, you may be eligible for a free Repeater, all you would pay for is the shipping which is $7.00.
If you are not eligible for the free Repeater our cost is $49.95 plus $7.00 s/h. To determine eligibility please call us at 1-800-355-3515. Our hours are M-F 5am-6pm, Sat. 7am-4pm MST.

Please feel free to email me with further questions.

Best Regards,
HomeLink Customer Service

When my power goes out and my generator kicks in I have to reset the opener.
