Motorcycle trailers
« on: February 02, 2007, 10:57:12 PM »

I wanted to gather feedback concerning the pros and cons of a motorcycle trailer.  I've been considering this for long trips (4 days or more), but I'm not sure whether this is a worthwhile investment.

I did mean a pull behind trailer.  I am looking for feed back on if it makes the bike handle any differently  and if its worth the hassle of getting one.  Sorry about the confusion

 ;D ;D ;D

You want to know the worst part?  In my first version of the post I did quote you!  Then I deleted my own so I could do it again without quoting just so you could bail out if you wanted to.  Then I'd pull my post.  And it'd all be like a thread virgin all over again.  But instead we get to laugh about it here.  BB is definitely one cool dude  ;D [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] .

Now, about pull behind trailers.  I'm always tempted man.  Never done it though.  I really really really like the idea.  The practical side has always kept me off of it a bit.  So someone else will be every bit as interested in the response you get as you are.

I have no personal experience with pull behind trailers but I do know of an event that would keep me from pulling one.  This guy on a dresser was on his way to Sturgis a few years ago pulling a trailer.  He had his girlfriend in the backseat.  He had a flat rear tire in Wichita Falls, TX.  He pulled into a station and had it patched, then took off again.  I suspect the patch was not a good one and the tire started going down again because shortly after leaving town, he was getting squirrely, the trailer tire went off onto the shoulder and pulled the bike down.  It was a freak accident that cost him his life.  His girlfriend was only scratched and bruised a little but apparently the handlebars caught him in the ribs and punctured a lung. He survived the fall but later died in the hospital.

AJ,
Now you know why everyone quotes everyone else all the time. When you make a bonehead mistake like I did in reading the original post starting the thread, you don't get to use an eraser. I'm notorious for pulling my mistakes off the board when I can get away with it. Twolane knows that about me and we played a little follow the leader. One of the fun things about the site is knowing another member's habits and playing along. Still, this is an open forum and you read my post even if I was wrong as to the original question, so feel free to comment on the gist of what I said. It's all good as some folks like to say . As to the original question, I picked up a pull behind trailer a couple years ago because Bubba_T had been looking for one and I found one for like $750 at an estate sale. Wish I could remember the brand, but it was a real quality product and at times I wish I'd kept it, but Ken (Bubba's real name) is a good friend and I had promised him the trailer. He pulled it to Sturgis last year from Moss Point Mississippi and said it was one of the best investments he ever made. Why wouldn't a $3,000 trailer for $750 be a good investment  ;D I'd tell you to PM Ken, but he hardly ever logs on and it could be weeks before you'd get a response.

Ok. Now I've learned to be sure I save a copy of what I am responding to before answering. I will quote you from now on. ;D

Getting back to your original comment about trailering a motorcycle. Since 12/1 I've racked up 3000 miles. That's 1500 miles a month. And that's not including riding the Deuce. My question is how many miles are too much? What is the life expectancy of the SEUC² ? I was planning on going down to Florida in a few weeks. Some here have complained about sitting in the saddle for that long of a trip (500 + - each way). I can handle 180 - 200 miles for a tank at a time. 3 - 4 stops in a seven hour trip are fine. But, do I want to rack up these miles going back and forth or save the mileage for trips like Hot Springs when I'll be riding with a group of others?

IMHO, pull behind trailers are the greatest thing since sliced bread.  If you do a lot of two-up riding as I do and want to stay gone long, the trailer is the only way to go.  I've never found a way to efficiently find a way to pack several pairs of womens shoes in the saddlebags and the tourpak.  Before the trailer, we were never able to be gone for more than a couple of days at a time.  Since having the trailer, it's never a consideration about what to carry and what to leave at home, we just carry it all!  ;D
They really are nice, I have a Bushtec and you never know it's back there except for requiring more brake to stop and as always, with or without the trailer, more power would be nice.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Be careful AJ. I think thery're only good for 1400 miles/month. :o And per the CUSE manual, they need to be rebuilt every 15000 miles! ::) Just messin' with you AJ. Don't worry about miles. Just ride it as much as you want. The only thing it might affect is resale. If your keeping the bike, that don't matter. Everything on a HD can be rebuilt. You can keep your bike forever! ;) Hoist! 8-)

I have pulled a American legend trailer now for about 18000 miles and have had no problems. My wife and I love it we can pack all the stuff you need in there for a good two week trip. And yes you need to mind your distance because of the extra weight . Go to this web site and it has a list of about every trailer mfg. out there http://aerobourne.com/motorcycletrailerindex9.htm. My personal favorite is http://www.american-legend.com/index.html any way enjoy your time on the bike . One question for you what kind of hitch you would purchase because no one makes a good hitch for the seeg that doesnt look gotty I purchased a new hitch had it cut and welded and re chromed if needed pm me and i can send pics.  Thanks cvojunkie

I have pulled an American Legend for about 10,000 miles and it's great.
The American way, have it and take it with you.

Chip
That's the same make and style traileras the one I picked up for $750 and sold to my buddy Ken ( Bubba_T) in Mississippi. Like I said he pulled his to Sturgis and back from MS without incident and loves it. So add Ken's name to the list of anyone recommending American Legend.
