Key and key fob
« on: March 19, 2016, 11:04:43 PM »

I was wondering if it is possible to get a key and fob all in one for the 2015 bikes like the 16's have it sure would be nice to have both in one unit. I went to my local stealer and of course there was a new guy behind the counter that looked at me like I am stupid. Maybe I will call Jon at Horny Toad. If they can cut the key from my vin, I should be able to pair the fob up to the security system.

Unfortunately the new key/fob won't sync to the computer on the '15's. I tried to get one for my '15

It sure would be nice, but I am not changing my computer, maybe in the future moco will figure it out and make a key/fob single unit replacement for our bikes. Thanks for the replies.

Don't lose to much sleep on this one.

I wouldn't miss it at all if the all in one CVO key fob went back to the old style.
The biggest complaint I have is... the key is almost always opened up.
This is due to the little button that opens it, very easily gets pushed in, while in my pocket or on the belt loop.

The other complaint is, mine stopped working the day I got the bike.  I was left stranded, because I didn't yet program the PIN code.
Dealer had to special order a new one.

The guys are right about this one.  Just be sure to change out the batteries every year or so.  It's heck to get caught out away from everything and that's for sure when you're batteries will die on you in the fobs.  I change mine every spring to be safe.  It's $5 insurance that's well worth the 500 pennies!

Is this the CVO key fob in question?  This is what came with my 2016 CVO Pro Street.

:2vrolijk_21:    I'd like to add that it would also be a good idea to keep a spare battery in it's packaging somewhere on the bike itself, just in case that less than one year old battery in the fob suffers a premature demise.  It happens.

I'm not sure this has been discussed before, but I have a question for those with the late models.  Does the infotainment screen show any kind of warning about a low battery in the fob, and if so is it obvious enough to assure people will react to it?  I know some cars have a warning, but unless they are obvious and persistent enough to cut through the fog many people seem to be in while driving, they aren't much good.

Regardless, everyone with one of these 2007 and later buttonless security system fobs needs to take this seriously, and one of the very first things to do is set up their personal security code so they can still turn off the security system and start the bike when the fob fails.  The owners manuals have a wallet card that you can fill out with your personal code and it has the instructions on it for using the code.  Set your code, fill out the card, and keep it in your wallet.  And it would be a good idea to practice using that code once in awhile.

Is this the CVO key fob in question?  This is what came with my 2016 CVO Pro Street.

The Touring models have a fob that controls the security system, and another fob that controls the remote locking feature for the bags and steering lock.  For 2016 Harley finally combined those two fobs into one, but it's not backward compatible.  It looks like yours, but it also has two buttons for the lock system.

True.  Of course you don't have a tour-pak lock so in Harley's infinite wisdom you aren't a real "touring" rider and don't need a central or remote locking feature.

IMHO, no motorcycle needs a central locking feature, since there are no doors to unlock in order to gain entry, and most people haven't become so feeble minded (yet) that they've forgotten how to use an old fashioned key to unlock  a saddlebag or a tour-pak.  I'm constantly amazed how people who thought having a tachometer as well as a speedometer on a bike was hot chit back in the day, now can't imagine riding a bike without all the comforts of their big luxury car.  I'm still expecting to see someone come out with air conditioning for a bike, to complete the package.

change out your batteries yearly when you renew road side assistance
travel with both FOBs
early warning sign is when bike starts only when FOB in a certain location.
Agree with using the security card code as a backup but a major PITA

I never enabled mine. No annoying chirp, no batteries to worry about.
