damage to look for?
« on: March 22, 2016, 11:29:14 AM »

My father's 2001 Heritage fell over inside of a cargo trailer when the trailer came unhitched from pickup. The bike went left hitting the trailer wall and broke clutch lever assembly then went right onto another motorcycle hitting it hard enough to puncture the other bike's(not his) gas tank. Other than obvious damage what should be checked on bike. A friend of his did this and will pay for repairs. I'm looking for suggestions on hidden damage. Maybe steering? Thanks

Don't mean to sound unhelpful here but you really need to actually know what you're looking for here.  Someone can say "check the neck" or "look at the frame tab" or any of many other things.  But if the familiarity with specifically what you're looking for and looking at isn't there you won't know a visually minor (but still significant) tweak from normal.

I agree with 2Lane.  I would even go a little further, and bet it ain't hurt, other than what you actually see.  Ride it!  Later--HUBBARD

As the guys have suggested make a list of the obvious damaged items.

If you are concerned about potential neck and steering damage, conduct a fall away test and see if anything is out of whack.
Also check your brake master cylnders to see if there is any weepage.

Do the same with the tank fittings.

I hope all is OK and it can be ridden soon.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I was able to see the bike for the first time today. I doubt that it has any serious damage. I have read on here that picking up a bike the wrong way can hurt it. Not sure what it hurts other than maybe riser bushings?

Sounds like both of these bike should be OK.  To break the "tab" in the neck does take some effort from what I have been told.  If you are still concerned put in an insurance claim and haul it down to your HD dealership for their inspection.
