Can a 96" be bored to 103", or new 103" cylinders?
« on: March 25, 2016, 01:42:49 PM »

I'm looking at a motor that's a 96" on eBay, but they say it's been bored out to 103".

Can the 96" accept straight bolt in 103" cylinders?

What is the max a 96" can be setup to run without case boring?

Thanks.

Can the 96" accept straight bolt in 103" cylinders? Yes

What is the max a 96" can be setup to run without case boring? 107 using stock barrels or 110" using Harleys new barrels and pistons

Thanks.

Jim,

Thanks a bunch.

My next project I plan on using a 96" or 103" "B" motor because of the smoother counterbalancing etc.

This is not going to be a high revving application.  It will be mounted in front with the crank running lengthwise to the reverse trike.  I'll have a comp or sorts from the crank to the input of a Mazda Miata 6 speed.  I'll be relying more upon lower end torque for driving rather than the higher revs on a motorcycle.

If I were to bolt in a set of 110" pistons and cylinders, could I use the existing '96" heads?  I know that they may have smaller valves, but that might actually help with a bit more low end torque.

I think I had a thread once about changing out to a larger bore on a "B" motor.  I was worried that by going larger, the counterbalancers would not be the correct weight to balance the new larger bore.  But I believe the consensus was that I could do the larger bores with the "B" balancing without having to worry about changes in piston weight.

Does that make sense?

Thanks again.

all TC cylinders are the same (except for bore size),so 88" can be bored to 95" or 98" & 96" can be bored to 103" or 107".
