« on: March 30, 2016, 04:16:34 AM »

Hi all so my 13 se is traded on fri 1st April ( April fools ) in UK well i hope not . Im no stranger to cvo since my first oil drinker in 2008 anniversary - 09 cured the oil problem . Then came an 11 RG Ultra but preferred the bat wing so a 2013 came ive been very happy with it but i kniw the Rushmore handle better so a 16 blue is coming on Friday .
To the point then will i miss the Garmin 660 or is the infotainment nav a good replacement ?

In my opinion, HD really missed the mark when they put an HK system in the new bikes instead of a comparable Garmin system.  The HK system has been plagued with problems since its introduction, although to be fair, they've released updates to resolve many of them.  In general, I find the HK system more awkward to use and not as intuitive as Garmin's, but that may simply be because I've been using Garmin for 12 or 13 years and I'm used to it.  HD also doesn't offer lifetime map updates like Garmin did.  While Garmin released an updated map set every three months or so, NaviExtras (the folks who do the maps) doesn't seem to do it nearly as often and if their file naming system is any indication (the latest release is 2014Q2), they're two years behind, at least here in the States.

I guess my thoughts are to do your homework and play with the system as much as you can, learn its quirks, and give yourself a year or so to get used to it.  It's not Garmin, but it's all we have to work with.

Infotainment nav is a joke, Cyril.  Awful, outdated, useless....

I went from a 660 on my last Ultra to a 590 on the current one.  Mounts nicely with the HD Chrome bracket that attached to the clutch housing, and with a little extra harness and 5 mins with the digital tech at the dealer can be made to come through the infotainment system (though it won't interrupt other things.)

I have the HD Road Tech z590 on my 2015 Limited and it WILL interrupt Boom! AM/FM/BT/USB for prompts.  It is mounted with the clutch mount and uses the aux input kit available.

Yes, I know Big Lew, but the RT one doesn't do some of the things the normal one does.   I'll be changing to a 595 soon in any case.

No, it really is utter garbage, Cyril - buy yourself a Garmin.

I had and loved the garmin 665.  Liked the xm radio and the weather radar overlay was awesome...avoided a lot of rain.

Was hoping that the new 595 would have the xm option but no joy.

I have decided to stay with the he Boom GPS for now.  The main reason is that the Garmin was so useful and informative....I found myself paying way to much attention to it while riding....and knew it was putting me at risk.

Once you learn what the Boom can do...it will get you to where you want to go.  The main different is that the Garmin allows you to do a lot of route planning while you are riding....where as the boom requires you to do your route planing while stopped.....which for now....I am willing to live with.

I plan all major trips beforehand and load them on to the 590 as .gpx files, so no planning while riding.  Gamin maps are updated free several times a year.  The maps on the infotainment centre are so old here in Europe that they were probably used by the Romans (even the latest "update" is several years old). Garmin warns me of speed limits, school zone 20mph limits etc. It also provides (not an issue for Cyril) TPMS on my bike. Garmin display is excellent - HD display is so low res that it looks like a computer screen from the mid 80s. (Really, MoCo? on a £30k+ bike, you are too tight fisted to spend a few extra bucks on a HiDef display?) The software that this Eastern European Naviextras mob have is amateurish (every time you load it with the flash drive from your bike, it tells you there's an important update, which it claims to load, then the bike tells you it can't find it..) Doubtless they are the cheapest the MoCo could find to do the job.

I too would load my routes before on my trip.

But the Garmin is so convenient that I would find my self looking up fuel stops, restaurants along the route while riding.

I have even looked up and made hotel reservations via Bluetooth/iPhone while riding because it is so dam easy.

-Search for lodging near destination
-Look at a selected hotel in map view to see what near it.
-Press the selected hotel phone number in the details view and it dials the number for you.
-Make the reservation via Bluetooth head set.

The Garmin Zumo ROCKS!!

So picked up the new bike this afternoon straight away it was smoother to ride & felt much faster in the turns , didnt have too much time but happy with the ride .

Infotainment can wait a bit thanks but for your honest comments , of course no longer can i plan the route in the house before i leave ( unless i bring it inside ) errr nice idea but dont think it would go down very well .

Will post a picture in the other section .

actually you can plan your ride inside.  I use garmin basecamp on my laptop to plan the routes just like I did when using the zumo.  export to usb thumb drive as .gpx file.....then import files to boom and good to go.

When riding with others with boom, I let them use the thumb drive in import routes so we all have the routes loaded.

The factory nav on Rushmore bikes has grown on me.  Hated it at first on my 15 SERGU as I was so use to my Road Tech (garmin).

However as HD has updated the factory Nav on Rushmore bikes and I have learned how it operates its not so bad.  Still not as nice as the Roadtech.

But you can load preferences into it so it makes searching for things like say Subway, or favorite hotel much easier.  You can also chose near me, along route or near destination.

For example I use Choice hotel chain, so all their brands are listed in favorites.  I have a route programed to get me to Red Lodge MT, and I decide its time to stop for the night soon, I can quickly search for Comfort Inn along my route, when it comes up, I can select call, and make a reservation and then set it as a way point.

You can also load routs using Base Camp to plan them on your lap top.

I tried this last year and it just would not follow the route the way I had it planned, I used the HD ride planner don't know if that's the problem. Will have to try basecamp and see if it makes a difference.
