Service Manuals
« on: March 31, 2016, 09:23:39 AM »

I just ordered the 2015 touring service manual. I think that it should be your first accessory purchase. There is also a 2015 FLTRUSE service manual supplement. I perform routine maintenance and small repairs but rely on the dealer for things that require special skills and/or tools. Is the regular manual sufficient? Do I need the supplement because I have the CVO?

Depends on your level of mechanical experience and skill, and the degree you'll work on the bike yourself.  The model supplement and parts guide are very helpful and considering what you have and will spend, inexpensive.  Just my opinion.

Get the supplement.  It covers those things that are included on (and exclusive to) the CVO model.
I can't be specific about the '15 Roadie, but for my 10 CUSE5 it has proven helpful as it has useful info about the nav system, stereo, amp/power locks/110 engine/ torque specs for the (then exclusive) SE compensator, hydraulic clutch.

Thanks guys for the opinions. I also found others after a search of this site (new guy mistake - should have searched first).

Cheers

The supplement is a good resource even when the dealership is doing the repair or warranty work.  It helps to know what the service writer doesn't know when they're trying to blow smoke up your butt.   :2vrolijk_21:

Agreed!  The more info you have on your bike, the better off you will be in the long run.

All three is way to go.

Well.......    If you're starting from scratch and want to begin servicing your own, while never having done a lot, one might consider not only the common three  mentioned here but also the electrical diagnostics manual.  That manual has some troubleshooting/diagnostics not published anywhere else.  But you only need it if you're planning to go that deep.

If you're decently competent already, however, you might be quite well served with just the parts manuals.  The exploded views will make clear many disassembly steps you might be unclear of and can do so more readily than the written instructions sometimes.  Especially if you're not planning on going deep in to electrical and/or electronics troubleshooting the parts manual may be enough.

You can never have too many books.  They aren't always cheap though.  So it's not illegitimate to pick and choose a little if you want to.

Definitely.  And the water rings on the covers are "proof" you've actually got your hands dirty on your bike (in case she doesn't believe you).

I can change the oil, fill it with gas, put air in the tires, grease the neck, change the plugs, install a new battery, change a light, and make it shine like a new penny.  Anything else, I'm takin' it to Tilley's.  Oh yeah, almost forgot, I can bleed the brakes!  I ain't buyin' no damn books!   8)  Later--HUBBARD

Careful Carl, without more tools we can't even completely do that on the new ABS bikes  :huepfenlol2: .

Isn't there actually four?

Regular Service Manual, then the CVO Supplemental Service Manual, Parts Book and the CVO Supplemental Parts book.

There's not a supplemental parts manual.  There is an electrical diagnostics manual though.  It is not model specific but can be helpful depending on the problem you're trying to sort.
