Hot Bike...starting problem...would not crank
« on: April 01, 2016, 07:53:40 AM »

2014 CVO Road King..Fullsac DX and 2" baffles..Fullsac TTS map.

Was in Daytona for Bike Week.  Riding in stop and go traffics....friend's motor stalled...I pulled over to assist and turned bike off.

5 min later went to start and wouldn't turn over....one or two slow cranks then nothing....acting like a dead battery.

Waited 15-20 min then the bike cranked and started as if no issues at all.

I know the bike was hot....rear cylinder was going into cooling mode.

Any thoughts as to what happened?
Could a very hot engine be to hard to crank over?
Could a battery overheat and loose cranking power?
Don't worry about it....this is normal for Harley?
Dude...your battery toast...time for a new one?

Thanks
Cat

Not seen that happen on a Harley.  But I had a 69 Camaro 396 that was like that.

My 09 Ultra with stage II 103 was hard to (crank) start when hot, till I put in manual compression releases.

My 12 CVO SG never has a problem cranking, but it will sometimes not start on first try when hot.

Possibilities:

ACR's not working, still able to start when cold but cranking pressure increases significantly when hot.

High resistance in the starting circuit - check voltage drop with a meter from positive battery terminal to starter positive connection and from negative battery terminal to starter ground (I believe the ground is through the starter mounting bolts to the engine).  Test cold and hot.

Marginal battery - do a full load test.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Did it only have the start issue that one time, or has it re occurred?

Check the mounting bolts on your starter.  Make sure they are tight to spec.
