More 117 questions
« on: April 03, 2016, 11:50:15 AM »

I purchased a 117" SE race kit for my 11 110 Ultra,  as I thought it was a good value even if I didn't use all the parts that came with it.  As well from reading posts on here I purchased a Power vision from Fuel moto with the wide band Auto tune to replace my PC5. I have a Bub 7 headpipe and CFR mufflers. I know that the CFRs don't have a large following with the tuners on this forum.  My questions are with the 117" will the CFRs work better since I am increasing the displacement?  I also wonder which cam will give me the best torque curve?  I've seen some really nice curves on T man and GMR cams   Any advice?  I tour with a lot of long hauls but still like to dust the occasional hot bike between stoplights.  I'm not not looking to break the bank building this motor but in the same breathe I don't mind spending a little more to create a solid build    Any advice from the wealth of knowledge here would be greatly appreciated     FYI my last bagger was an 05 SEUC 103+ heads and pistons T-man 590 and PC3 usb making 115/125 and rode it issue free for 60k miles and it would dust off most challengers

My first intention was to build a 117, but the more questions I asked my builder about the bottom-end, the more concerned I became about realiability, and the longevity of the build.  I was told a stock 110 bottom-end would eventually fail with 110+HP.  This information was based on my builder's knowledge of my style of riding, and his experience.  There are some people here that disagree with me, and that's ok. Not everybody rides like I do.  But that said, I decided that if I was going to have to split the cases anyway, to get my 110 to stand more than 110+HP, I would build a 124 from the ground up.  But that's just me.  The craving for HP is an expensive addiction.......and it always gets worse.....never better.  But Lord, the fun I've had!!!  LMAO!  There endeth the lesson.  Later--HUBBARD

An interesting distinction with these new 117" kits compared to when you began yours Carl is that the new kits are bolt on.  Don't have to split the cases.

I'd agree with you totally otherwise.  If I had to split the cases anyway there's just not that much difference to go bigger.  If it's only top end work that changes all the financial math considerably though.

Me too.  I've got a real chance this summer too.  Haven't booked a room but have it on the calendar and have talked to a buddy about having his teen-age kid house and dog sit for me a for a few short trips over the summer.

Hi,

Long time reader, first time poster...

I am waiting for my LR-S to arrive and it will be 117'ed. What additional items would be suggested as worth doing at time of upgrade and wanting to stay SE for (dealer) warranty?

Roller Rockers?
Which clutch?
Oil pump or cam plate?
Others?

The other option is waiting for a decent period to pass and using S&S, Woods, et al.

Cheers,
Surly

You like loud pipes, why not a D&D, with a ghost pipe for your 117"? Tune way better than cfr's.

S&S makes a 124" hot shot set up specifically for the CVO bikes.  Even offered in granite

There are a number of dyno charts posted in the 117 threads on this site. As for torque: I'm breaking 120 at 2800 rpm and 130 at 4000 rpm. The kit is very rideable as it comes from the Motor Company with 259E cams. Good luck with your choices. You will love the power.

Yeah, I know, but I didn't want a Crate Motor.  Got a new set of Harley Cases, and punched 'em.  And, I wanted to go back with a Black Motor.  Black looks better on my Bike.....more contrast.......to me, anyway.  Later--HUBBARD

The hot set up isn't a crate motor.  You use SE cases or bore your stock cases for the cylinders.  The kit comes with the everything else.  Just an option.  Good luck

Obviously, I didn't research that, but my mind was made up.  I've used S&S products for years, and can't recall any problems, whatsoever.  My decision on a built motor was based more on the relationship I have with Tilley's, and the comfort level of personally knowing who built the Motor from the ground-up.  That probably reflects my level of OCD, but that's just the way I am.  And, as the 103 Heads we had NRHS work were Black, that made my vision of a Black Motor a reality.  I'm pleased with the numbers, but haven't had the opportunity to see how long the Ol' Girl's legs are, yet.  Plan to do that soon.  It's a beautiful day here in WV today, but cold as a whore's heart.  Too cold to ride for this Ol' fart, anyway.  Later--HUBBARD
