TPMS sensors
« on: April 05, 2016, 08:08:28 PM »

So my buddy has a 2015 SESG in Carbon Crystal with the chrome aggressors.  I have my 2016 SESG in White Amethyst with the contrast black and chrome aggressor. We are thinking about swapping wheels because we both think the wheels would better accent each other's bikes. My question comes to the tire pressure sensors in my wheels. Will they swap over to the 2015 wheels?  I figured they would, thinking that the MoCo wouldn't completely redesign the internals of a wheel just to fit the new sensor.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Well, I was finally able to swing by the dealership today and ask my parts guy. He said the wheels with the TPMS sensors are machine slightly different to accommodate the sensor, thus not making it possible to simple swap sensors onto new wheels. He had previously asked about the same thing, and the MoCo told him he was on his own if he tried modifying anything to do it. Guess I'll stick with black and chrome.

The info on the wheels supplied by your well informed parts rep appears to be bogus.  Just looked up the front wheel for both a 2015 and a 2016 SE Street Glide.  43300321 is the front wheel part number for both bikes.  No difference in the front wheel itself.  Why your parts guy couldn't have just looked up the part numbers for comparison is something I don't know either.

That the wheels are the same in no way suggests that just installing sensors will make TPMS work though.  There are other parts somewhere on the 2016 that must read the data the wheel sensors transmit.  Maybe just bluetooth in the radio or some dedicated receiver somewhere else.  But there's got to be something else going on somewhere.

Part numbers for the radio are the same for both years.  So (perhaps with a software patch?) the 2015 radio should be able to display whatever the 2016's radio can display for TPMS data.  The fairing harness for both bikes has the same part number also.  The main harness, however, has different part numbers for the two different bikes.

Looking at the schematic for the 2016 harness don't see anything on that main harness that is noted as being TPMS in any way.  So no dedicated receiver I'm seeing on a quick look now.  Perhaps the sensors are just bluetooth sensors and the radio just needs an update to handle them?

No idea if that's right or wrong.  But it's not inconsistent with what you can see actually looking over the parts lists for the two different years bikes.  The only thing really learned for sure, however, is that the wheel is the same on both year bikes.

Thanks Twolane. I thought it would have been odd to make the wheels different instead of making the sensor fit the wheel.

We are not trying to add TPMS to the older bike, we are wanting to to transfer my sensors to his wheels, and then put his wheels on my bike. I want his chrome wheels and he wants by black wheels. Sounds like we might just have to dismount the tires and take a look at the wheels side by side.

Saw the different part numbers for the chrome versus black wheels.  Since those wheels were interchangeable there's nothing there that suggests the others shouldn't be a direct swap also.  I've never seen a bike or an auto wheel that was machined differently to accept a TPMS sensor.  Like you say, the sensor fit the wheels rather than vice versa.

The 2015 uses the old straight valve stems, and the 2016 uses the new right angle valve stems AND the rims have a new cast "pocket" or whatever you might call it where that stem attaches.  The sensor appears to fit into that pocket.  So before assuming anything, you might want to actually remove the tires from each rim and do a real eyeball comparison of the parts, and even try mounting the 2016 components to the 2015 rim to check for clearance issues.  I imagine the pocket probably exists to protect the sensor from damage during tire installation, but that's just a guess on my part.

How large area these? Did you rebalance wheels? Can you send a picture of them installed?
Thanks

I found the answers to these questions on the link supplied. Do you think they look ok?
Do they seem to be accurate? Does anyone know if they fit on the new right angle valve stems?

My 2015 limited has the right angle valve stems

I know.  But the parts list for the 2015 SESG shows the old straight type, so that's why I made that comment.  Since then I found an actual photo of the front wheel on the 2015 (chrome aggressor), and it does in fact have that same "pocket" cast into the rim for the sensor.  So it appears the rim should work with the 2016 TPMS sensor and valve stem.  Still be a very good idea to actually compare the two wheels in person though before making the swap.

Has there been any more research on this? I really want to add TPMS to my 2016 FLTRXS, even if I had to do some machining to the wheels.

There are lots of products out there like http://www.360bc.com/
