Traces of metal in engine oil!!!!!
« on: April 06, 2016, 05:23:02 PM »

Hey guys. While changing the engine oil in my 2004 SE E-glide, I found traces of metal on the magnetic drain plug. The engine has 69,000 miles on it now, has been properly maintained all it's life with a new Screaming Eagle Hydraulic cam chain tensioner and high flow oil pump upgrade kit (pt # 25284-08) installed at 40,000 miles. This is first time I have noticed any metal AT ALL on the drain plug since I have had the bike. IS IT TIME FOR ANOTHER UPGRADE CAM CHAIN KIT ???? Now, I know that the ideal situation is to never have any metal show up on the drain plug at all. Take a look at the attached pics and give me some feed back. BTW, the engine is not making any different, weird or out of the ordinary noises, the oil pressure has not changed recently and the bike still pulls like a tractor. lol Guess, with that many miles, one could expect to have some more noise than a new engine. Hopefully the attached pics are good enough for you guys to check out. What kind of miles did any of you guys get out of a cam chain tensioner upgrade???  Been too long now, but what made me do the first cam tensioner change was being told that at about 40k miles that the original cam tensioner would fail anyway, so why not go ahead and do some preventative maintenance. Thanks

There are a lot of people more informed than me on this forum but I would remove the lifters and cam cover and inspect.  Good luck and let us know what you find.

Hello there..
In looking at the attached pic, that looks pretty normal to me for wear and tear.  There are no chunks, or anything like that, and a little metal wear is going to occur.  I am sure others will chime in as well.  But if that were my bike, car, etc, I wouldnt be worried at all.

Wouldn't bother me provided I cut the oil filter in half and verified I didn't see metal in there.

If you do cut the filter try to use a pipe cutter as opposed to hack saw, that way you won't create filings from the cut

You think you have a problem!   :confused5:  This is what a oil plug looks like when the oil pump is failing.

Send a oil sample to Blackstone Labs, you'll get some really good feedback.
