Leesburg Bikefest 2016
« on: April 24, 2016, 02:59:21 PM »

Did anyone else make it to Leesburg? I usually go on friday but waited till saturday this year due to possible rain on friday. We bypassed town and went over to Mt Dora for lunch then back to Leesburg for late afternoon/evening. It was so crowded people were parked at the edge of town by the chemical plant on the east side of town. We rode all the way thru town and never found a parking spot on street. Found $5 parking as leaving town by the church's, kept going to I-75 then south to Wesley Chapel and had nice dinner, then the Hard Rock for casino action.
I have definitely gotten old as I just did not want to park a mile away and fight the crowd, enjoyed dinner and a/c only thing better would have been to win at casino, but that didn't happen.
Leesburg has grown so large they need a bigger area, good for them. They try hard to make it a good time and treat visitors like they want them. Good for them!
Next year I will return to my friday am arrival vs saturday afternoon.

Too bad they are starting to gouge. Holiday Inn Express charging 399 for a 95 dollar room. Nothing like biting the hand that feeds you!

We stopped going when the motels started gouging & doubling/tripling rates.  The first few years were fun, easy parking, good time.  Have not been in years.  We go to Daytona instead, more stuff to do there.

I totally agree with the more stuff to do in Daytona and I stay for 4 days there vs ride there and home same day to Leesburg.
BUT your statement about you quit going to Leesburg due to motel costs...NO Body gouges more than the Daytona hotel/motel association. Regardless if Bikeweek, Biketoberfest or Speedweeks, Hell they even gouge for the Thanksgiving Rod Run. Not saying Leesburg motels don't charge more when they can, just saying Daytona wrote the book on that one.

True for the chains & bigger unit places in Daytona, stupid money & they get it.  Away from the venues, still in Daytona, some Mom & Pops can be had for $70-75 a night.  You have to negotiate at the desk, they all start over $100. Some will not budge, others will.  Few years back we could stay on A1A ocean views for about $100 a night in some Mom & Pops, no luck there anymore.  South on US 1 from Main Street, have stayed in that area many many times for $70 a night or less both Bikeweek & Biketoberfest. Older places, but clean.  A friend has a timeshare in DB, we get that usually now - much nicer than the Mom & Pops.  Also sometimes stay on points, there are some chains that are close that can be booked with points, booked one for the last Saturday of Bikeweek on the last Monday of Bikeweek & they had points availability.

Have ridden to the DB rallies & the Leesburg rallies as day rides from Tallahassee, makes for a long day though.  Just gave up on Leesburg, if I lived closer would go for day rides. That's all we do anymore for Thunder Beach & do not go to that as often, even though is closer.

I sat at the rest area just north of Leesburg on Saturday looking for a place to stay. Couldn't find a room for less than $350 and most were sold out.

We all complain about motel/hotel/campground pricing during large events. BUT if I owned a motel/hotel/campground I would charge the max I could get for the area. And no matter what the rest of you say, you would do the same thing. No different than selling your car, selling your house or whatever, you want as much as you can get. I do not hold it against the seller, I really do not blame them. Times are hard, make it when you can.

Well said.  The price is what the market will bear.  Some choose to pay it, others do not.

Leesburg, quoting the great Yogi Bera:  Nobody goes there anymore.  It's too crowded.

Been to the first one( real good), and several others. Between the heat, humidity, parking problems, crowd, and bogus gouger vendors, I won't go anymore.
There's a lot of good riding in that part of Florida, which is so much more worth while.

The first ones were fun.  Without a number of A list vendors plus the very crowded conditions, for us is not fun so we go elsewhere.  We have better roads to ride in the panhandle/south Georgia.
