See Ya...
« on: May 07, 2016, 03:08:37 AM »

A sad day.  My beautiful 2014 CVO Limited is gone but not forgotten.

Last February I was riding around a curve in Death Valley and encountered a near-head-on situation with a speeding Mercedes Benz who was in my lane.  He moved before I had to bail out into the desert but it caused me to begin thinking about my mortality.

Then, a couple of weeks ago my buddy came within a whisper of being rear-ended at a stop sign by some ignorant woman talking on the phone.

That did it for me.  I talked it over with my wife and decided to get rid of the bike.  After all, there are still many, many ways that I can kill myself and maybe her, without an inherently dangerous motorcycle.

Lest you think me a wus, many years ago I had a very bad accident on a motorcycle and I know what it is like.

So, even though my heart says ride, my brain says don't and this time I'm listening to my brain.

I sold my bike to Las Vegas Harley Davidson, delivered it Wednesday and last seen it was sitting on the showroom floor looking for a new owner.

Take care guys, and please ride safe.

Sorry you had to make the choice, but completely understand. Only yesterday just 1 mile from home ending a 400 mile run a cage driver pulled a lane change smack in front of me :o I stopped a foot from slamming into the side of him  :soapbox:  is what I gave him.

It doesn't mean you have to leave the forum. I'm sure your views and knowledge on topics could help fellow riders. I do think other members would agree.

I understand as well. Lately I have had several really close calls and I think will wear out my horn. I ride to work every day to downtown ATL and I run across just about everything possible. My wife loves to ride but as we get a little older we do think about giving it up.  We ride on weekends and go on trips so we have had close calls together as well. You may very well end up with another bike later when you think about the memories but you will always have those memories and will always know what riding a motorcycle is really like.

You aren't alone in doing this. I know many who stopped riding, claiming it's simply too dangerous these days with all the craziness on the roadways...  :nixweiss:

Sorry to see you give up something it appears you really loved, but I fully understand where you're coming from.  When we are young we tend to be foolishly complacent about risk, but as we age most of us tend to become more conservative.  Not everyone is willing to share their misgivings and actually do something about it like you did.  I commend you.

These days I feel the same way about driving a four wheeled vehicle btw.  The inattentive and self-absorbed idiots have taken over our highways, roads, and even parking lots.  Rules are for everyone else, but not them.  Enforcement of the rules is a joke, at least in the states and localities I usually travel.  And as someone once said, being in the right doesn't make you any less dead.

Damn, guys........to each his own, but ain't none of us gonna' get outta' here alive.  Personally, I ain't checkin' out 'till the bell rings.  No matter where I am, or what I'm doin', it ain't over, 'till it's over.  So.......until then........I'm gonna' ride........or maybe haul it to the ride.  I ain't gonna' miss one of lifes many pleasures because of some idiot in a cage.  Stay alert!  Enjoy the FREEDOM!  There endeth the lesson.    Later--HUBBARD

Go off road riding instead. (MX or ADV). Much more fun and no texting SUV drivers behind you.

Everyone makes their own choices.  No statements to anyone that decides what they feel is best for them other than to enjoy whatever comes next  :drink: .

You made a very sound hard decision.  Only you can decide if that what will put your mind to ease.  Everyone rides for different reasons and everyone has a different perspective on risk/reward.  I sold my motorcycle after my dad was in a very serious and almost life ending motorcycle crash.  Two years later he bought another bike and started riding again.  I had mixed feeling about him riding again after seeing him on the side of the road lifeless with blood running out from under his helmet.  I have two young kids that I didn't want to leave behind because of my selfish reason to ride a motorcycle.  After a few years of not riding I realized along with my wife that I was not the same person since I stopped riding the motorcycle.  I was tense, short tempered and irritable with everyone.  I have a very stressful occupation as a business owner.  I don't get to walk away from work at the end of the day.  I carry my stress with me always.  Riding was my only release of stress.  I don't get to ride as often as I used to, but even if it a long ride every three weeks and a few short trips to and from the office, I get to have my moment.

If in your heart you know that you made the right decision and hold on to your memories, you may be content and happy.

Wishing you the best of luck
