strange water leak underneath my 2016 CVO SG
« on: May 09, 2016, 06:41:24 PM »

A weird scenario for my 2016 CVO Street Glide…I gave it a thorough detailing on last week and a few days later I road it for almost 2 hours in 90° clear weather. My bike is also kept in a climate controlled shop. Ever since the day that I washed it there has been a puddle of water right under the belt guard as you can see in the picture, which has not stopped even after riding the bike once more. I swab it up, and hours later it's there again…never more than a small puddle, and it is completely clear, and definitely water. Any ideas? Is there some sort of reservoir there? Would the frame be holding that much water from a washing?

Interesting.  Strange to have that much water still in a nook or cranny after a long ride in warm weather...would expect all of the "stored" water to have evaporated or blown out by then.  Maybe a new MoCo feature:  built in drinking fountain.  :nixweiss:

On the rear brake side of the swing arm, there is a loose rubber holdown that snaps into the swing arm and the water gets in there.  Put a little clear silicone around it.

Where the plastic belt guard is, remove the belt guard. If I remember correctly, you remove the rear screw.  The front screw you only loosen enough to slide the belt guard forward about 1/4" and then it comes down off the screw.  The belt guard is elongated is what I am trying to say.

Then look up at the bottom of the swing arm and you will see a drain hole in the arm.  Hold the belt guard up in place and drill a hole in the plastic guard so the water can drain out properly.  Then reinstall the belt guard.

When this problem first came into being the water dripping out of the swing arm was rusty, since the interior of the swing arm wasn't painted or treated with a corrosion preventative.  If yours is just releasing clear water, perhaps that means the interior of the swing arm on the newest models is now coated with a corrosion preventative product?

As Boatman said, the solution is to seal the arm so the water doesn't enter, and then drill or notch the plastic belt guard so any water that does find its way into the arm can easily drip out without collecting in the guard.

Wandered around in my archived files and found the original Tech Tip about this problem from 2009.  I'm attaching it just for information, but I can't help also commenting on how seven years later they still haven't done anything to seal the holes that allow water to get in.
