So I have 20k miles and heard some ticking a few weeks ago. I decided to be proactive and make sure i don't have the mexican lifters in the bike. I pulled the bike apart today and this is what I found. Wear on both cam lobes on the front cylinder and both lifter rollers. I want some feedback from those who know more than I do about cam wear. What happens if I install the new S&S limited travel lifters with this cam looking like it does? I don't feel any rough grooves but it obviously doesn't look like the baby butt smooth rear cylinder lobes.

I am assuming that I have to now replace the cam. That being said, what would you guys go with on this bike? Stock 110 2012 model with fullsac header and power cores, k&n intake, and will be dyno'd with the street tuner. I'm thinking S&S 551 or 570.

Im kind of shocked that it had this much wear but maybe im overreacting.  Somebody please set me straight here. Thanks

Sorry here are the rest of the pics. The smooth lobe is the rear cylinder.

Don't make the same mistake I did and use SE lifters. They tic and tended to have pumping up issues after sitting overnight. My 2010 CVO went through lifters and cams about every 20k even with oil changes every 2k

That was the entire reason I pulled it apart, to get the SE lifters out of the bike. Wasn't expecting to see my cam trashed but glad I caught it in time. I already bought S&S limited travel lifters and push rods but now I am just trying to figure out which direction to go on the cam. I am willing to spring for a gear drive cam but need to check my run out on the crank first. I'm hoping the SE flywheel is balanced and true and I can go that route. Chain or screw drive though I need to figure out which cam, don't want to do any top end work, just want a reliable bike that has a little umph.

There are many choices out there for bolt in cams. First you don't want a gear driven set. I went with the Kury TC-24D cams and I am very happy. I'm sure others will chime in.

Why wouldn't I want a gear drive cam? I thought that was the better option, quiet, no tensioner issues, etc.??

Well I pulled the trigger on a Woods TW-7H cam from FuelMoto. After I get it in and the bike tuned I'll post the results.

Be sure to replace the inner cam bearings with full compliment bearings while your in there. IMO Woods cams perform very well, but most tend to be noisier than other brands. I`d of chosen the T24D`s or may GMR 577`s for a 110 without any other mods. fwiw twinotter

I had gear drive in my 06 and it now has close to 80,000 miles with no issues running strong.

I bought new bearings and seals inner and outer. I just wish I had looked at these lifters sooner, it would have cost less to cut the pushrods and replace them with the S&S quickie pushrods just to get a look at the cam lobes and lifters earlier than to now have to replace the cam and hope that the metal that came off the cam lobes and lifter rollers hasn't been eating away at the inside of my motor.

Gear drive cams require an accurate crankshaft with very little runout of the pinion shaft.  2007 and later Twin Cams have much more runout than previous models.  So unless you plan to upgrade the crankshaft, gear drive cams wouldn't be my first choice.

Does this mean you're planning to put in an SE crank?
