Does the ECM store info?
« on: February 07, 2007, 07:15:03 PM »

Sorry to bother you guys with what probably SHOULD be common knowledge by now for me, and my last post got moved, so I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot  :-\...again...I'm sorry....I'm a NEWBIE  ;D BUT I'm learning !!  Anyway...was wondering, if the bikes computer system " stores" information?  The reason I'm asking, is with doing any type of modification from exahust to power comander...etc...  When I (we) HAVE to go back to the dealer for my Intervals, (to maintain warranty) after putting everything back to "stock" can they(dealers) still see mods have been made to the bike ??  I Guess what I'm asking...Does the Bike have a downloadable hard drive? Is everything that happens accessable to the dealer Via computer?  I'm only 37, and I'm feeling WAY out dated here...and very voulnerable...HA,HA  ;D  Just another question I have hope I'm not irritating anybody :nervous:   I know everybodys  been really cool about answering my questions....so THANKS   :2vrolijk_21:

Jack, we don't believe that the ECM knows there's a PC connected, but it's not totally confirmed. I've gone thru numerous scenarios on this subject. I've basically determined that you need to put the engine warranty second and put your engine first! If you get your engine running right, you shouldn't need the w.....ty! If you trust your dealer as your tuner, he should stand behind the modifications he does anyway! We've all tried to figure out the best way to scam the w.....ty, while doing the mods you need. Bottom line since there's no surefire way is, just worry about getting the engine right! Search the threads here and you'll find me trying to figure this out entirely in many threads. I got my bike 2 weeks ago and have determined that the only way to get the bike right is to do what you want. W.....ty be damned. It's not that you won't have one, you just might have to fight for it. If your dealer's doing your work, you shouldn't even have to fight for it either! Believe me, your not the only one in this boat. We're all in it together! Do what your tuner recommends and don't worry too much about anything else. Getting your motor set-up properly should be your No. 1 priority! ;) Hoist! 8)

Jack, the ECM logs hours and maps downloaded to it.  Also "knows" if a SERT has been installed/downloaded.  Harley would like everyone to believe it "knows" if a Power Commander has been hung.  Power Commander's manufacturer says otherwise though.  My own experience with bikes taken in while a Power Commander has been temporarily removed reinforces that.

There is one problem with the premise to your question though.  You need not return the bike to the dealer at the regular service intervals to maintain the warranty.  You can do regular service yourself or have any other shop you please do it.  Keep receipts to show the parts/supplies purchased to confirm the services have been done should they ever be necessary.  But, no matter what the dealer might be telling you, they can not require that you let them do the work to keep the warranty in force.

Cool...thanks for that info!! So, I should have no problem trying my new baffles, and seeing how she runs, they won't have a clue?  :nixweiss:  I figure it can only help her breathe better  :)  But I needed to know how much they can " see" with the bikes computer.  by the sond's of it....nothing like that  :2vrolijk_21:

Howie,
Did the moderators declare the word warranty to be a cuss word, or something. I'm reading your post trying to figure out the inference. Yeah, the cold drags on for the 4th day, but I'm not usually this dense. ??????? what up dude ?

I didn't think about scary chit like that Chip.  Chrometanium leakage can probably cause some bad stuff.  He could have brain freeze or dissociative-suddenly-don't-like-chrome-aversion-disorder.  The man is sick.  Sick!  Time to cut him a little slack.
