Question about cylinder head work and performance
« on: May 13, 2016, 06:27:15 AM »

Thinking about head work on my 117 but I don't want to change the torque curve. Right now I have 115 tq at 2500 rpm. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want to ruin a good thing. May sound stupid, but I admit I'm a dummy when it comes to engine mechanics (which is why I love this site). I want what I have but more of it. So, if I have head work, how will additional air flow affect torque in my engine?

Some basics on a topic that can be volumes..
The porter needs to know what cross sectional area (csa) to target to achieve the goal yet not overkill (flow bench OCD) and kill the air speed. Valve sizes and the complete port geometry needs to be designed. Some require large changes others not so much such as the CVO heads.
Grinding in the proper areas is very important and allows the port to work more efficiently, in other words very little csa increase to yield a higher percentage air flow improvement. The hot spots.
Done right you won't loose low end torque, bottom line.

I was poking around and it looks like Zippers has a pretty solid package for the 110 heads - and a specific setup for the wet heads.  Any experience with those one way or the other?

I sent mine to WFOLarry & he's well respected in the HD world & one of the best on 110 heads.

Porting heads done correctly should not change the torque curve. It should only raise it throughout the entire RPM range. A good rule of thumb is good heads should add 10/10 over stock.  Don, Kirby, WFO Larry, or Ward Performance would be a great choice to get what your looking for.

I am running a set of Zippers Water Heads. So far I am pleased with the build. It's a 113 build with Kury TC24-D cams. No dyno till May 24th. But the seat of the pants is very happy.

Be Safe

Don (HD Street Performance) is who did the heads on my 13 SERK with is a 110 with the 259E cam.  I'm very pleased with the results that were achieved with his porting on my head, the 10.8 compression, 55 mm HPI throttle body, 5.3 injectors.  Very nice torque curve and over 110 torque at 2.75 and stays high until 5250.  121 max torque SAE and 122 HP.

The bike rides easier and smother throttle response than stock, but is a heck of a lot quicker.

I would talk to him if your serious about head work.

Stock 110 heads on a SE 117 drop-in kit.

As long as your goal  is explained to your porter, and he knows what he's doing.tq & hp will both get better and actual curve shouldnt change

Could you share the link to that dyno sheet in SAE?

You will also need to take into consideration your exhaust. Once those heads have been opened up and smoothened out.
And as I recall the pipes on your the baffles can not be exchanged out for another size if needed.
Just something else to talk to the head porter about.

Rockytop117,
Here is an SAE chart of an identical build with exception of the bike and exhaust.
