15 cvo limited one fan does not turn on
« on: May 13, 2016, 07:09:10 PM »

Hi guys
15 limited cvo twin cooled .. a question about the fans ,  they both use to turn on but only the left one will run since DEC (not much riding up in the north just started to ride a few Weeks ago ) when the bike is on.
..they both use to turn on .In self diag mode they both work. Took bike to dealer . they are not sure but  for some reason they are running down the bcm rabbit hole.. Doesn't seem right as the ecm controls the fans .. They are a decent shop with good techs but i am kinda lost . Didn't know if anyone has experience this or not  like a sensor or not . i figured i would ask and maybe post it before i took it to them but went for  few other things also  so they would look at it . I would appreciate any feedback .don't know what i could add to help  ..  I don't think there was any codes as they had not mentioned it ... Great bike( not first cvo ) and the dealer(O'tooles hd ) has always been great to me as i am lucky for that and has taken care of me .Thanks for any help

I noticed you're running a TTS tune.  Was that added recently, as in after the last time you noticed both fans always running, or has it always been there?  The reason I ask is I seem to remember something posted by Steve Cole (TTS) some time back indicating his calibrations altered the stock fan operation.

OK, I managed to find it.  Follow this link:

hi
i have had it since october and the exhaust .   i noticed it that it did work both fans   then after the tune from fullsac .i noticed it in dec as i had it idling and the left one worked and not the right one .. maybe it never got hot enough to turn the second one on.
   thanks

I stagger the fans starting point 10 degrees apart in my tunes. The left comes on first, if water temp continue to rise more than 10 degrees then the right turns on
as well. Perfectly normal to have only the left fan running below 13 MPH.

Thanks for the info Steve.
Will order a pipe/core/TTS combo in the future

Also to be fair, the HD dealer cant be blamed for not knowing the details of an after market calibration.

I agree.  This is an area that can create unwanted and unnecessary service visits, and with at least some dealerships could lead to unnecessary part replacements.  Similar issues were created some time back when TTS started locking their calibrations, with some dealerships actually replacing the ECM's when they weren't able to download new information to them.  Perhaps the TTS folks should provide each customer a simple list of items they have modified other than the tune itself.  Everyone doesn't read these forums or dig into technical details, but a lot of people might notice the different operation of a cooling system fan and assume something has failed.  Just a thought.  And btw, I believe the staggered fan approach they adopted is a better approach than the stock Harley setup.

To be fair again, as I read the above it was Steve at fullsac, not steve at TTS that set the fan logic.

To be fair again, as I read the above it was Steve at fullsac, not steve at TTS that set the fan logic.

The temp settings for each fan were adjusted by Steve of Fullsac in the map he supplied, but Steve Cole of TTS is the one who added that capability to the TTS system and to all the canned maps they supply for the Twin Cooled bikes.  Having both named Steve can get confusing.

I'm not being critical at all, I just think it would be a good idea when altering something like this to give the customer an up front notice that his cooling system will operate a little differently so don't be concerned when only one fan comes on initially.  It would save everyone involved from having to ask or field questions, from having people take their bikes in for service because they think something is wrong when it isn't, etc..  Kind of like a comment I made in another thread about how nice it would be if Harley were to install a decal on the battery cover of the bikes advising the customer or anyone else about the proper way to disconnect the battery with the '07 and later security systems.  Based on the large and still growing number of posts around here concerning people disconnecting batteries without first disabling the security system, and the problems that causes, the need is obvious.

I believe the left fan/radiator cools the rear cylinder which typically gets warm faster than the right side.

The left radiator receives the return coolant from both cylinders (they are connected by a manifold located between them).  See the attachment for details, click on it to expand to full size.

Is there a good reason the hot coolant doesn't get split and sent to both radiators?  The current system of coolant routing makes for fewer hoses and connections, but if I remember heat transfer correctly, sending the hot coolant to both radiators would result in better cooling and a higher cooling capacity.
