As sad as this is, the B-52 has a stellar record for flight hrs/crashes. It has been the United States main long range bomber since 1955. How many other weapons delivery systems are this old?

They'll probably resurrect one from the bone yards to replace this one.      JoeS

Actually will have to.  It's happened before too.  We've got arms control treaty requirements with the Russians that will mandate it.  The treaty not only sets a maximum number of warheads, missiles, delivery systems, etc; it also stipulates a minimum number.  A B52 was brought back from the bone yard and flew to a new home in Louisiana (if I remember correctly) maybe two years ago.  Guess we'll have to do it again.  Hate to see the old plane die like that but it was great to see when it happened that the crew got out.

It sure is an impressive aircraft.  So sad for its loss but so very glad the crew was unharmed.

My childhood dream was to be in the USAF at a SAC base and my first duty station was at a SAC base with B-52s.

I spent some time at Andersen AFB, Guam, with the bufs and could tell you about it but it was a long time ago and probably not all that interesting.

stationed at SJAFB which is a TAC base with SAC attached in the mid 70's. we had F-4 on one end of runway alert pad & BUF's (big ugly ------)& kc 135 refueling tankers at the other end. B-52 has to take off mt on fuel then get refueled in air. they are really neat pieces of equipment, no doubt
