How'd you ride it?  Like you stole it, or like the MoCo recommends for break-in?  Which, btw, I think is bullchit.  Later--HUBBARD

Really? Are you sure you are checking it consistently, meaning cold or a few minutes after you have ridden it, and checked it in the same spot (level ground)?

The next question I have is, did you check the level before you ever rode it?  Just because the Dealer said they did their PDI, that doesn't mean they did.  There has been occasion.  If you're that concerned about it, as I probably would be too, I would change the oil and filter, or just fill it to the appropriate level, and proceed to run the hell out of it for 4-500 more miles, and then check it again.  I'd bet it'll be up to the full mark.  However, Ol' Maybelle requires 6 Quarts, but I only put about 5 3/4 qts back, so it reads just below full.  But that's just what I do.  Some will disagree, but that's my call.  I've destroyed a few Motors in my day, but none have failed due to lack of lube.  Later--HUBBARDl

Did you actually check the level the same way before and after?  In other words, oil up to operating temperature immediately after shutting the engine down?  If you just walk out in the morning and check it cold before you run the engine, you could be thrown off by not only the oil temperature but also the fact that the Softails have a tendency for the oil to gravity feed into the cam chest and crankcase when the engine (and oil pump) isn't running.

If you didn't check it before the 450 miles, as others have already mentioned you really can't assume it was full to start with.  Don't assume anything.  I recommend you get it up to temperature and add oil to the hot full line on the dipstick, note the odometer reading, and then keep a log of miles and dipstick level.  Always check it the same way to eliminate variations other than actual consumption.  Don't add until the level actually drops to the ADD line.
