FOB Lock and Unlock
« on: May 26, 2016, 10:08:14 AM »

On my wife's 2015 CVO Limited compared to my 2016 CVO RG Ultra, the distance and point of activation is significantly different.  On her bike, you have to be very close (couple feet of bike) whereas on my 2016 I can be 20 feet away and it will lock or unlock the bike.  Also on her bike you have to be at a certain position relative to the bike for it to work.  We changed the batteries in her fob...but still the same.  For those with CVO Limited's is this similar??

My 15 CVO RGU is similar to hers.  I have to be within about 5 feet and works best on right side of bike.

You might try changing the battery in her fob (make sure it's fresh battery and hasn't been sitting on the store shelf for three years) and try again.

My 13 CVO Ultra Classic, even with new battery, I have to be close to the bike and standing directly behind the bike it doesn't work at all.

Same for me on my 13. I have to be right next to the bike near the right side cover. Sometimes it takes several tries to get it to unlock, it locks easier though for some reason.  :nixweiss:

Same here on my 2015 CVO RG Ultra. You must be within a couple of feet, and then it's hit and miss. Same result with either of the 2 fobs.

I can't remember anyone ever posting that their power lock system worked more than a few feet from the bike, going back to the very first time Harley offered it on a CVO.  If we have one person with a 2016 model who claims his works 20 feet away, I'd be interested in hearing from others with a 2016 to see if theirs also has decent range.  Perhaps the MoCo changed something so that after eight years it finally works right?  Anything is possible, even if improbable.

I find it amazing Harley can not get this simple technology to work.  My 06 truck, the doors un-lock or lock every time I press the FOB button with in 10 feet.  My 14 Stingray, I do not even have to take the FOB out of my pocket, walk up and it un-locks, walk away and it locks.

Yet my 15 Harley some times it locks the first time if your right next to it, some times you have to try seven or eight times, and move around to find the magic spot that day right next to bike.  Same thing with un-locking you have to find the magic spot and press it many times.

My theory all along has been that the Harley system is more of an afterthought than a properly engineered system, since it's only been offered on the lower volume CVO's.  The auto industry on the other hand installs their systems on most of what they produce, other than the cheapest econobox models.  It most likely comes down to where they stick the antenna for the receiver.  Just like another antenna we've been discussing lately (XM), Harley doesn't necessarily place it where it would function best, but rather where it's easiest for them.  If I owned one I think I'd enjoy taking the time to at least temporarily relocate the antenna just to prove the point, but of course I don't own one.

Anyone know where the antenna is located or at least where it should be?

I would be interested in the results of a little experiment. Those of you with bikes that have remotes try this when your remote refuses to work close to the bike. Hold the remote up under your chin and press the button. Don't laugh, it extends the range of automobile remotes by about 20 feet. We use it all the time to find cars.

Same here. Mine seems to work best when it's right over the gas tank pointed toward the dash (seriously). If I happen to lock the from forks when locking it, it has never (seriously) unlocked it whenever the saddlebags and trunk unlock.

Many times I have suited up, key deep in front pocket, chaps or rain gear on only to realize the ignition didn't unlock.  :nixweiss:

Same issue for me with the fork lock. I used the key to unlock it the first time that happened and the whole lock assembly popped out. It was supposedly repaired but I don't trust it so I seldom lock the ignition anymore. That really renders the bag locks useless but I haven't been stuck out on the road since then with pieces of the switch in my hand.
