Q. rear pad on 2007 Ultra
« on: May 26, 2016, 06:47:53 PM »

I need to change my rear pads. I was looking it over and I see the calliper is held by the wheel shaft and there are (3) three bolts that hold the calliper body together.
Q. is,... to change the pads dose one just remove the (3) three bolts and break the body? or do you have to pull the rear wheel shaft and drop the wheel to lift the calliper out?. Appreciate any advice.

Do not pull the 3 bolts out. Take heavy putty knives and push the pad closest to you in then pull small pins out. Use a 1/4 12 point socket. The pad will fall out. Install new one hold in place with pins partially installed . Repeat procedure on inner pad. All can be done in minutes with wheel in place.

The pins go though the loop eye of the pad?

If all you want to do is change the pads, you can do that without removing the wheel or the caliper.  The method involves using something like a  putty knife between the pads and rotor to create a little clearance, then loosen the pad retaining pins and slide the pads out.  Then you need to press the pistons back into the caliper far enough to allow you to slide the new pads into position and install the pad retaining pins.  That's just the condensed version off the top of my head btw; you will want to get the real detailed instructions from the manual.

If you want to also rebuild the caliper, then I'd suggest removing the wheel and axle to allow you to remove the entire assembly.  I've never tried just separating the caliper from the arm by removing the bridge bolts, but I seem to remember that isn't the recommended method per H-D.

Good one guys Thanks. When I was looking at it, it looked like the calliper had to come out. I'll give it a shot in the morning  :2vrolijk_21:

That didn't look like the right way to go, but was not sure. Cheers

I tried to scan the pages from my 2005 manual (same as a 2007) but the resulting file was too large.  So I split it into three files, I'll attach one to this post and then add two more posts with the next two sections.  Much better to use the official manual versus my somewhat shaky memory.
