113 Rebuild cant quiet down the lifters
« on: May 28, 2016, 11:37:26 AM »

Hi all,

After a rebuild and conversion to 113, have been having problems getting the lifters (S&S with travel limiters) to quiet down,
seem OK when i first start up but get noisier as the engine warms up.
Have just done a oil pressure check, Got 12 PSI @ idle, 15 PSI @ 1500rpm, 30-35 PSI @ 2000 rpm and 40 PSI @ 3000 RPM.
Thinking maybe need lenghten the puchrods a few more flats?

Any ideas?

Thanks guys, Ride safe.

the S&S lifters with the limiters have a different adjustment procedure than the standards. check their web site.

My first idea would be to get rid of the limiters.  I don't understand why people seem to think they need them on a relatively low revving Harley.

How did you set the lifter preload (how many turns from zero lash, which pushrods did you use, etc.)  Lifters with limiters only have half as much total travel of the piston available, so you only extend the pushrod from zero lash half as far as you would with the standard lifters.  Just cranking them a few more flats isn't the way to do this, you need to go back to the beginning and carefully adjust each pushrod from zero lash, and stick to what S&S tells you to set them at for those lifters.  You have half as much room for error as you had on a standard or stock lifter.

You are running our of preload as the motor warms up. The limited lifters need to be adjusted just a few flats off the bottom. I agree they are not needed.

Is it easy to remove the limiters from the lifters?

Now that you've installed them, t's easier to adjust them properly than to remove them.  Adjusted properly they will work fine...

What is the reason that you bought the limiters?

Too many of us are behaviorally trained to buy the most expensive rather than what is best to the task.  Who knew Pavlov and BF Skinner rode motorcycles......

Only reason I fitted lifters with the limiters was that my local dealer only had those in stock at the time I needed them

As it seems a simple job to remove the limiter rings , I am going to remove them.

Ride safe.

Sounds like the right plan.

While the lifters have to be properly adjusted, maybe they aren't making the noise.  Could it be the rocker arm shafts ticking?

Have already fitted "rocker lockers"  to stop that, the rocker shafts did have witness marks on them, I find it hard to believe that
a premium manufacturer can make so many poor design errors such as that, and then have the liberty to tell loyal customers that "they all do that", when will this stop, the list is endless, poor cranks, roller bearings instead of timkens (then just to rub it in they produce a kit to put the timken back in the case", poor quality lifters, as a 2007 110 owner also piston slap, oil leaks from head gaskets as I said the list is endless!

Thanks for the comments, Ride safe.

Thanks for the comments, Ride safe.

I'm going to take a different position on this. Some of these common 'known' issues are not so prevalent these days. The tensioners were fixed in  '07(apparently for good) The earlier 110 troubles pretty much don't come up any more except for the lifters. The cranks are holding up much better in performance builds than ever before, just based on observation of forum chatter. I'm not in the biz, so I don't have real data, but the discussions and the anecdotal stories mention "scissoring" a whole lot less these days. The Timken kit is available because people *want it* because:*while you're in there* and *it must be better*, but are you hearing of crank bearing failures?
No. ROD bearings, yes, some, but crank bearings? Not so much.
No question, the lifters are baffling. I don't get why they are so difficult to get right, and why they are able to just trash an entire engine. Maybe we need to install screens in the cam chest!?
Of course, now its cooling system leaks, so I guess we'll start a *new* list.
